Default Little Brown Bird applique points

I don't have any photos at work, but let's start at the beginning. How are you laying your leaf pattern on the background fabric? I suggest that the entire design be placed RSU against the wrong side of the background block. Pin in place and tape to a window or use a light box so the design is visible. Next, trace over the design onto the right side of the fabric using a #2 mechanical pencil. Don't use a regular lead pencil as the point will get dull and lay a broad line on the fabric. Trace over the "master pattern" with a light hand--don't press heavily. To check this, slip your hand under the paper and see how dark the pencil lines are--too dark, use a lighter touch. These lines are your sewing lines. When tracing, use the ball of your hand as a pivot point so that the lines are single, not scratched back and forth. Once the master pattern is on the right side of the background block, you're ready to needle turn applique. Stay tuned and I'll try and get photos posted. Sandy

Think I need to add the following. I don't use freezer paper, glue, starch, plastic sheet overlay or anything else to apply the pattern or stiffen the applique fabric. When I first started appliqueing, I checked out all techniques and decided to do it the most logical way to me to get the pattern on the fabric and applique. When the master pattern is on the background block, I Roxanne's Glue Baste It with several small dots to hold in place--rather than pinning, which I used to do. Which patch goes on first? Start from the patch farthest away and build to the foreground. Sandy

Thanks for the info Sandy...makes sense. I think I'll change to the glue baste immediately! I would be interested in how you do those long skinny taper type points...

I don't think I'm that brave to take on such a stunning quilt. But good luck to you.

I only wished that I was younger because as one member stated it would take a life time to finish. Such patience and talent. It is beautiful. Has it been entered in any quilt contests?

OMG, what a lot of work you have ahead of yourself. It will really be a family heirloom when it is finished. Good luck and keep us up to date on how you are progressing.

I really love this quilt and love to applique but at my age I know it would never get finished. Good luck to all those who are going to make it. I never saw this one before..or the book for that matter.
