I have decided I want to make a log cabin quilt as a Christmas gift for DB and DSIL. I've found patterns, but just can seem to find directions on the quantity of fabric to purchase for a queen size quilt.

Can anyone lead me in the right direction, please?

This isn't the pattern that I use, but the information would you give you a good idea on how to figure the amount of fabric for the pattern that you want to make.

Can't tell you how much you need for your quilt, but can tell you that I made a queen size log cabin for my daughter's wedding present, and I know I had purchased at least several different fabrics until I finally got the right color combination. Good luck!! I'm sure it will be awesome. Hope to see a photo when you're finished.

Quilt in a Day Log Cabin quilt book is wonderful. It has many ideas for lay out and it has any size and yardage measurement imaginable. Also in details it goes over the quick rotary techniques. Anna

I also used this book for my first Log Cabin. Loved it. So easy to understand and love the different layouts.

It's going to depend on how large of a quilt you plan to make! Queen size, as with other quilt sizes vary dependent on how much drop you want.

Also, the width of your strips will affect your end quantities. And how many different fabrics you want to use.

Best to make a sample block, as you'd like and then do the calculations for what you need. Or of course, use a pattern for the info.

Looks like Eleanor Burns is the authority on log cabin quilts according to you ladies. I'll look into that further for sure. I love the flexibility of designing the finished quilt once the blocks are complete. There are just so many choices.

Of course, fabric shopping will be lots of fun too!

I personally don't care for EB's method - I like Judy Martin's book on log cabins much better. And using EQ to design the layout.
