I just finished this and am looking for border suggestions. I was thinking a white border and then a dark turquoise border....what do you think? What sizes?

I have more fabric of each shade of the turquoise...so....what borders would you add?

(Yes, I also posted this in pictures, but some folks never go look at pictures, and I want lots of suggestions. :) )

The white washes out the colors in the quilt. I would go with a narrow border of the strongest color then the color of your choice. Do you need a border for size? Maybe just a binding in the strongest color would be best for this one.

Looking closer, I see a print, so I'd do the narrow dark color and the biggest print in a wider border with a binding of any except the white.

How complex and how much piecing do you want to do? When I saw the picture of this beautiful quilt and you wrote you had more of all the turquoise shades you used it I immediately envisioned a bargello type border done in all the colors you used in the quilt. I would put a very narrow border (maybe only 1/2" finished) of maybe the darkest turquoise than a pieced bargellow on the outside probably around 8". A lot of work, but I think it would be stunning.

Oh, Feline Fanatic, I am way too new at quilting to create this border! I even had to go search to see what a bargello was...that is how new I am. Just creating this Trip around the World used up all my patience. :) It would be beautiful though. Maybe 5 or 6 years down the road....on my next Trip Around the World.

ITA with the PP who said the white would wash it.

My first thought would be a nice strong frame on it ... the darkest of your turquoise. Width about 1-1/2 of the size of your blocks.

That is unless you are wanting the size increased. Then maybe work with the other colours, but keep it simple, so as not to draw from your nicely done pattern in the centre.

Second thought, would be to bind it the way it is. Again, the darkest turquoise.

You did such a spectacular job on this quilt I never would have guessed you were new! I probably about gave you a siezure when you saw what a bargello was :lol: :lol:

In that case, yes a very simple border will do just fine. Your darkest turquoise will make the center sparkle. I am a big fan of inner and outer borders so I would do a narrow inner in the darkest turquoise (maybe 1" finished) and then I would audition the other colors for a slightly wider outer border 3" or so. But it may look spectacular with just the dark Turquoise. Lay a strip out next to the top to audition. Also remember, when you make a border you need to measure the center of your quilt and cut your border strip to that measurement. First attach opposing sides (I simply prefer to do sides first, you can do top and bottom first if that is your preference). Then once attached measure quilt again, again from the center and cut the remaining borders to that measurement.
When I attach a border I like to match up my ends and pin then pin in the center then place pins periodically along edge to ease in any fullness. I am sure it will be lovely once all done.

Thanks, everyone, for the good suggestions. Feline fanatic, I feel honored that you couldn't tell I am sort of a beginner. Yes, I did know instantly that I could not do a bargello. :)

I was going to take a few days off of quilting, but I find myself already auditioning fabrics for the borders. I have actually been quilting a bit over a year, and so far my borders have not been wavy...probably because I measure the center before I cut my borders...learned that from my sister, who HAS been quilting for years.

I don't need to make this quilt larger, but I like the look of two borders, so that is what I am leaning towards.

I would definatly go with the darker color, as previous posts said, the white might make the quilt too washed out.
