Hi all . I have a question about free motion quilting . I have seen quilters sew in place and snip the thread very close to the fabric . Ok , I also saw a utube video that the person clipped the thread longer , knotted it and ran it back through the quilt and then cut it . [ like in hand quilting ] I'm stumped which way is right ? Sewing in place is enough to anchor the thread so it won't come loose ? This is for my regular sewing machine , not a long arm . Any and all help is appreciated .

when I free motion quilt (on regular machine) I just do a few tight stitches to lock the stitch in place. Both ways to do it are "right" ways, just use which ever you prefer. I use the tight stitches because it is faster and easier for me than to pull the thread through - I admit it, I'm lazy!

whenever i do free motion stitching i do the sew in place at the beginning and the end i used to do the tying aknot but sewing in place to me is easier and i think it holds better

but really it is to each his own you will find that saying applies to quilting in a few situations !!!

Same here, stitch in place. Just remember to drop the feed dogs, I forgot and it was a bit jerky:( Just couldn't imagine what was wrong. :D
