Hi I'm the desertrose from AZ and I have a dear friend from my childhood days and she recently lost her third child. He was a 35 year old soldier who died of complications received during his third combat mission in Iraq. I would like to make her a special quilt to wrap herself in on those bad days. Something that will let her know I'm there with her. Any suggestions anyone may have would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You All in Advance,
Andrea

Buy some flag material and make it the center of the design. That will show honor to both him and why he died. You could also include patches from his unit on it if you could get them.

So sorry! Do you and your friend have a common interest that you could do, or her favorite flowers (maybe a flower garden feel). There is this quilt called Warm Wishes which is very nice. Maybe in the blocks you could add pictures of you and her through the years together.

What a nice gesture for your friend. I'm sure she'll feel the love from you in whatever quilt pattern you use.
Here's a link I found:

Below is a link for a stylized flag wall hanging. It could perhaps be enlarged for a lap quilt.
