We are looking for trim to put on placemats. Also maybe rick-rack or piping or braid.

Try making prairie points. It will always match and you can make them pretty small if needed.

Do you live a long distance from any fabric stores?

I tend to forget that some people don't have the luxury of several stores within "easy reach"

If you have washed/shrunk your fabric before cutting/sewing it, you should consider washing/shrinking your trims before applying them. Some of them also shrink.
