Hi there!

I'm new on this board, new on quilting, new on sewing Sounds a bit scary, huh? And come from Lithuania (European Union) (sorry for my not that perfect english as well )

Sooo.. I got my wonderful new Bernina 350 for my b-day a week ago, and I really, REALLY wanna start quilting Watched tons of tutorials on YouTube, read many post on this board, ordered some stuff needed for quilting at JoAnns (such like some rulers, rotary cutter, cutting mat and so on) aaaand... I don't have the right foot for my Bernina!!

I wrote an e-mail to our local Bernina dealer, they say I can order desired foot and receive it in TWO months.. Don't wanna wait that loooong.. Is there anything else, that I could do to start quilting?

And which feet would you recommend me to order? #9?? Or maybe #29?? What about #44C..? I will order needed feet anyway, but I wanna quilt a bit earlier than that.. Is it possible to do this WITHOUT those mentioned feet??

And which feet (maybe any other, like #37 or #57) do you use in quilting? I must do a wish list, what I need to order, because our one and only Bernina dealer can get all that stuff only every two months..

Congratulations on your new Bernina! For piecing the top, I use my #37 because it does a perfect 1/4 inch seam allowance.
For quilting the quilt sandwich, it depends on what kind of quilting you want to do. If you want to try free motion quilting, (no feed dogs) you will need a darning or hopping foot. It is the one with a spring on the shaft. My Bernina darning(FMQ) foot doesn't have a number on it.
If you want to do straight line quilting or gentle curves, you can quilt with your regular # 1 foot but a walking foot is more helpful. The walking foot helps to move the whole quilt preventing wrinkles from forming.

I bought a Bernina 350 just this month - wanted a machine to take to classes and to use when my big machine is being serviced. You will want a 1/4" foot (#37) a walking foot. I was fortunate to get all those feet with my machine as it was a special edition. You will love sewing on a Bernina - it is true what they say - nothing sews like a Bernina! Did you get the knee lever? Be sure you get extra bobbins also.

I have a 450 but the feet go on any machine - so here's my suggestion. A 37 is a "quilting foot" but I prefer the 57 because it has a flange on the side against which you align the fabric and it results in a true 1/4 inch seam. You should also get a walking foot (# 50) and Bernina recently came up with a "stitch in the ditch" face plate for this foot that is really realy nice for stitch in the ditch. It doesn't come with the standard walking foot. Finally, for free motion you need a darning foot (#9) or the Bernina Stitch Regulator (VERY expensive) if your machine will accept one. Not all models do. While waiting for the 37 or 57 foot you can use your regular sewing foot, like 1C or 20C but have to move your needle position so that you can achieve a 1/4 inch seam. On mine model I have to move the needle all the way to the right and align the fabric with the outer right side of the foot. AND as Nannie says above, get some extra bobbins - not all bobbins fit our machines so you might as well get some while you are ordering. Congrats on your new machine - you will love it!

I have a Bernina aurora 430. I use a 57 for the 1/4" seam and a 9 to FMQ. That will get you started. I see you are in Lithuania, you may want to check out sewing parts online to see if they will ship to you.

Yeah, I do have a walking foot, it was included as a bonus with my mashine. Must read the instructions how to use it, looks a bit difficult thing though

Nope, that knee thing was not included, but I will get it (must order), it cost only about $20, so no problem. How many extra bobbins should I get?

Yeah, I know I can get all that sewing stuff online, but such things like feet and so on I wanna get from our official local Bernina dealer, just to be sure all parts are original and with warranty.

Besides I think here in Lithuania Bernina parts are a bit cheaper, or am I wrong?

For example:

FHS - $20
Darning foot #9 - $20
Foot #37 - $16
Foot #57 - $24 and so on..

So I guess the prices are quite good. What do all those feet cost in US?

Yes, a bit cheaper I think. I understand your wanting to get the feet and parts from a Bernina dealer, but I have had no problems with sewingpartsonline--just in case you get stuck waiting long periods of time. Enjoy.

This is the link to a free on-line Bernina magazine. Each issue has info on special feet and projects to make. A nice magazine to flip through. You can download each issue and subscribe to free magazine to get the latest Bernina news in your e-mail.
There is also plenty of information on feet on YouTube, just search for Bernina Presser Feet. I live in Finland but rely on online dealers in feet and parts as they are very expensive here. Have fun, neighbour!

Place a piece of tape on your machine where the fabric would feed up to needle make sure it is where a 1/4 inch would be . Video os quilt in a day shows it.
