I am ready to finish a quilt that I would like to enter into quilt contests. The quilt blocks are hand appliqued and tedious. I would like to machine quilt the sashing and border using my Singer machine and then hand quilt around the appliqued blocks and larger sections. Is this a no-no to use both machine and hand quilting on the same quilt?

I will take the quilt to my first book signing for my Bible storybook, The Creation, this Saturday (2 days away). If I have to carry it with pins in it I will, but would rather have the sashing stitched so I could remove the pins. But I don't want to ruin my chances to get awards on it later.

It may depend on the contests. Contests usually publish their rules & regs on or with entry forms. Do you really want to show an unfinished quilt at your book-signing?

    Thank you for responding.

I wouldn't show it unfinished except for the fact that the quilt blocks are the illustrations for the book I will be selling. Quilting is an important counterpart to my line of storybooks. This is my first quilt and there simply isn't time to have it completed.

I don't think it is a no-no. You would probably need to enter it in a machine quilting rather than a hand quilting category, but that shouldn't be a problem. Good luck with it.

Thanks! I'm going to go ahead with sewing the sashing on my machine.

many people---even award winning quilters use both techniques in their quilts- there is nothing wrong with doing both. the only thing it would effect in a show is you would not be able to enter it in a hand-quilted catagory since it would have machine quilting on it- it is ok however to enter it in a machine quilted catagory-even with the hand quilting on it.
