Default best block for a sunrise?

I'm working on a wall hanging that will have a sunrise/set. I can't figure out the best design to make this. So far, log cabin is winning, but I'm still not 100% content with it. Ideas? Suggestions?

    Here's a sunrise star block.

Edit: For the sunset you could go with half of a dresden plate in different orange fabrics, maybe?

I've got the beginning of a "Chincoteague Sunset" patterned after photos I've taken on my favorite vacation place. It's sort of a bargello but I've had trouble deciding how to do my setting "sun". I finally decided I'm going to piece a sun separately and then applique it to the bargello part. Hope to start on it this spring.

Ooo--a bargello would be neat...but I think I'm going to go simple.... how about this--even though it looks like mountains. The lower part is pines with a cabin.

The second photo is a more complicated idea, but I like how it reaches. Ignore the pine trees--that's NOT how it looks. lol

I LOVE the look of the second picture! Nice to hear from you again. I've missed your posts and photographs.

A partial New York Beauty, half or quarter. Suits your locale as well.

Half a Dresden Plate makes a nice Sunrise.

I agree with ghostrider on this. If you can draft up a NYB block of the right size it would be stunning taking up the background of your cabin in the pines wall hanging. I would make two of them so you end up with a big half circle.

But I can't remember, did you tell me you don't like to paper piece or just haven't tried it yet? This would be the perfect opportunity to stretch your already expansive skills and add one more tool to your arsenal. If you are dead set against PP a New york beauty then I vote for your "delectable mountains" sunrise (the second picture) But I really think a NYB expanding across the sky portion of your quilt would be show-stopping gorgeous! One that looks like Block 2 or 7 from this site http://www.lenzula.de/pattern/free/nyb.php?l=en
