Default 9 or 10 degrees

I have a question. I have a pattern that calls for a 25" 9 degree wedge ruler to make a 50" circle quilt. On amazon they have a 10 degree 25 " ruler that also makes a 50" circle, so what is the difference? Will it throw my whole quilt off if I use the 10 degree? (it's less expensive and no shipping). Or should I play it safe and get the 9" Marilyn Doheny ruler the pattern is based on, I have no idea what 1 degree difference would make (other than saving me $10.00). Any info would be helpful, Thanks!!!!!

With the 9 degree wedge you will have 40 pieces to make the circle. With the 10 degree wedge you will have 36 pieces to make the circle. If it is a specific pattern requiring so many wedges of each design, then you will have to use the 9 degree. But if the pattern is the same for each wedge, (or just two different wedges) there should be no problem. Just cut less wedges.
I have used both of the rulers to make the spicy spiral and there was no noticeable difference. Good luck. Ann

Thanks for you help, the pattern alternates with each wedge so I don't think it will make much of a difference if I use the 10. I'm doing the circle quilt "Freebird" by MoMo in Asian prints and I don't think it will make that much of a difference. I'll wait to hear what others have to say too. Has anyone made that pattern? What do you think? I appreciate all the experience and expertise I find on this board.

a degree can make a lot of difference. I would personally get the correct tool but I'm anal.

The quilt pattern "Poppies" by Deb Mosa also calls for the 9 degree ruler. She has included a template for the 9 degree ruler with her pattern. You can find a link to her pattern and template on this page: http://quiltinspiration.blogspot.com...lo-quilts.html

I've been considering making a "Spicey Spiral" which also calls for the 9 degree ruler - but I don't have a 9 degree ruler - I do have a 10 degree ruler. I was in a LQS this weekend. They do not sell the 9 degree ruler but I had the opportunity to compare the store's 9 degree ruler with a new 10 degree ruler. At 11-1/2" from the beginning of the rulers, the 10 degree ruler is 1/4" wider than the 9 degree. Using this info you could theoretically adapt a 10 degree ruler into a 9 degree ruler - or - use the template I pointed out earlier.

Best wishes!

That's a neat pattern, I see it's a free download. http://www.redroosterquilts.com/medi...p_freebird.pdf I have the 10* and used it for the spicy spiral & the pattern says the only difference would be the finished size. If you don't mind if your circle is exactly the 50" finished circle use the calculations from others & go for it!
