The throat (also called the harp) is the distance between the needle and the machine. For example, the new Janome Horizon has an 11" throat.

Throat size is the distance between the needle and across to the body of the machine. It is the opening that allows the fabric to go through. Throat size is important when sewing large items. Does this make sense?

Wow, 11" seem huge. Now I'm curious what my Brother CS-6000i has.

What, I think I misunderstood this. You mean from the needle down to the machine? Or over to the machine?

Over to the machine (to the right of the needle).

From the needle to the back of the machine where the fabric feeds through.
