I saw on Fons and Porter (quilting show on PBS in Iowa) over the weekend about painting quilts instead of using so many pieces. What do you think of this? :?: If you have made one, would you do it again?

Paints can make the fabric thicker, which doesn't really matter on wall hangings.
Dyes keep the fabric softer, and are nicer for bed/lap quilts.

You can add dye to clear aloe vera gel, and then paint them on, they sell little foam applicators...

There are many ways to apply paint and or dye to fabrics... try going to youtube and searching for different techniques, pick up a few dyes (LQS sell some in little jars) and have some fun on scraps :D:D:D

Leah Day has a tut on her website for using Shiva paint sticks. Her logo was done that way. She doesn't recommend washing anything that has been "painted."

Sorry it took me so long to get back here. Being very busy. Here are some of them. The first three were painted and then thread painted. The last one was quilted and the thread of the quilted design used to resemble the designs of the fabric of her clothing.

Beautiful! It looks as though you painted the quilts AFTER you quilted them?

For the flamingo and the Blue bird I painted the design on organza, placed it backwards on top of fabric, layered with batting and backing and then quilted, therefore they look shinny. The cardinal was painted free hand on cotton, layered and quilted and the Geisha was a panel, painted, layered and quilted. The thread painting was done with the same color as the paint.
