Ok so I am workin on this cute quilt bag and the instructions call for ruffles which really add a nice finish look for the bag. I have my pieces prepared and was told to increase the tension to create a stich that will produce a ruffled look, I tried that and its not working. Using a needle and thread takes too long, but another tutorial said to change stitch to longest stich! So my question is when you change your machine to the longest stich does that mean to change the tension? I think my machine is a bro LS 2125 or 2150? It is the basic brothers.

I'm not sure of what kind of ruffle you need to make, but I have learned to use dental floss & do a zig zag stitch over the dental floss & then pull the dental floss to create the amount of gather desired.

When doing a ruffle I increase my stitch length to large stitches and sew along about 1/4 inch from the edge of the fabric strip edge. I then tie the thread ends together on one end. On the other edge, I pull the bobbin thread and the strip can be gathered into a ruffle. I tie the thread end together when the ruffle is the right size to fit my project. I then pin the ruffle in place and sew it on at regular stitch length.

I agree with Tartan. I don't see the reason for changing the tension but I use the longest stitch 5.0 and pull threads to fit.

I used to use the basting stitch. Now, I zigzag over thick thread (never thought of dental floss). Like my new technique! Very effective.

I have a ruffler foot for my machine which can do everything from slightly ruffled gathers to various sized pleats. Cost about £30

Before the ruffler, to make gathers I would sew two parallel lines with long stitches, knot one end, and then pull the other end to make the size gathers I wanted. I then knotted the other end, and zigzagged over the edge to keep the gathers in place before attaching to the project.
