Aww, I love you. My parents bought me a Kenmore for my 18th birthday. She has been a work horse and nothing but pure pleasure for me. I've had to change out her belts about 6 times since 1977 and replace her shoes (foot pedal) twice, but that's really not horrible since I have had her for XX (you do the math) years. If she was a car she would have had her first million miles about 15 years ago. She's working on the next million right now, and still keeps me smiling.

You couldn't give me a newer machine anymore. I'd get machine off your friend or go to ebay and get a nice singer featherweight or a Singer 301A.
Let us know what you decide on.

Maybe my Kenmore just needs belts? It does not move! Going to the very nice sewing machine guy on Friday!

If you are mechanically inclined, you can replace the belt yourself. If it just doesn't move it sounds like the belt is shot unless you really WANT to see the very nice sewing machine guy. ;-)

Is that the CS9000, they have for 199? I've been thinking of upgrading. I have an old Baby Lock Pro Line and although it does great, I'd like something with a bit more to it, plus the small table it comes with would be nice. In order to get one for mine, I'll spend 80.00 to have it made.

I have any personal experience with Kenmores, but many of them ate made by Janome and they seem to have a good reputation of quality at a budget price. I DO have a Brother HS 2000 which should go for $200 or less and really impresses me for that price. You can read machine reviews on patternreview.com. SO helpful. But a used Bernina would be the best, IMO, if you can find one. Lots of options at your price. If you are overwhelmed and don't have time to shop carefully, can you borrow a machine? I have several, and I know it's not uncommo. I have loaned out all but my $$$ faves.

Looks like you have to upgrade your account for reviews on patternreview.com. These kinds of websites bug me.

You may even find a great deal at your local dealer-used machines are traded up all the time. Should come with a warranty and service also.
