Hi Everyone,
Over the last months I've been working on coming up with some of my own quilt patterns....wanting to do some things that are original..and eventually would love to be able to find a way to get some patterns out there but not sure how to go about it - does anyone have any experience in this - I would appreciate any help or advice.
Have a great day everyone...
Bill

There are several on here who use E6 to design their quilts. I do it the old fashioned way, drafting paper and colored pens LOL Those with more experience that I will help you out!

If you're asking for assistance with marketing I'm not real sure. I do have a friend who is a composer and one thing his copyright attorney told him to do is to make a copy of his composition, seal it in an envelope and mail it to himself, then DO NOT OPEN IT when it comes.. the product in a sealed posted envelope helps prove provenance if a question comes up.. is this the type of thing you're looking for?

I'd start with this book

There are a ton of resources for starting your own business, search them out. Talk to others who are successful in the niche that you want to be your focus.

Tippy, if your friend is looking for proof that he owns the copyright to his composition in the event that someone else uses it and he wishes to sue for infringement, then that mailed envelope will be of no use. In order to sue for copyright infringement, the owner must have registered it with the Office of Copyright. If he is looking for proof that he owns the copyright in case someone else claims ownership and is suing him for infringement, then he is probably also out of luck since the other person will have already registered in order to sue him. He might want to check with his attorney about copyright registration.

i don't sell patterns but every quilt i sell is copyrighted and i also have a contract that i have everyone sign up front before i even cut fabric.

the copyright is about $40 each and the contract cost me $150 to have written but thats a 1 time expense.

No problems there.. of course he does that also.. this is just kind of "icing on the cake stuff" He's never had a problem that I know of and has been recorded, etc.
