I was going to post a pic of fabric but wouldn't you know my camera batteries died and I I bought the wrong size replacement batteries! Do you all think patriotic fabric would work with this? I have enough large scale "wavy" flag fabric. The light I have a nice white and a white with small flags and stars. ( I don't have enough of the light flags to use alone, but I do have enough of the white (tone on tone) to use alone. So for the lights I only have two that would work........... should I use just the white or the white and the light with flags? The darks I have several blues and reds with stars, fireworks etc.? I have been wanting to use for something, but not sure if I should for this mystery quilt? Opinions please................ so I can wash and cut the fabric....... tomorrow! As suggested by Omak.... I think.... I do have a little gold with small flags that says America the Beautiful........... Should I go with the Patriotic theme?????? If so should I use both lights....... or one ( I only have two that would work).... Should I use the gold? Any input would help I want to get the fabric ready today............... or choose another pathway......Also, I have been saving the Patriotic Fabric for something special.......... should I really use it in this "mystery?

If you look at the directions, and PLAN where to put each of your fabrics, if you put the waving flag fabric as the dark, use the figured patriotic as the light, and then your white as the "family" ... it might work out just fine.
A special patriotic quilt is a nice thing, what are you going to do with your patriotic quilt?
I would take the chance, but that is just me, with a complete decade of "saving" different fabric stashes which will either become quilts, or end up in a garage sale/thrift store at some point because I waited too long to actually accomplish what I purchased the fabric for ...
I happen also to be the type of person who prefers dark colorings/intense colorings, if you will ... the instructions are suggesting to me that most of the quilt will be light ... I don't see why we can't take the directions and change the tone of the colors ...
I'm not sure I can help you make the final decision, but I would also use the gold as one of the "lights/darks" ... since you would be using your novelty fabrics as the "light" ...
You can always use different fabrics, work the mystery ... or wait and print out the whole thing afterwards, and see if the patriotic theme would be appropriate ... you might find a quilt you will be able to enjoy in many themes ...

My son was a Marine and I'm going to make it for him. After lots of thought and input, I think I'm going to go through my stash and pick some other fabrics. I want to do the Mystery quilt as it unfolds, but don't want to chance using this fabric in case it's not wha I want. I have plenty, just deciding which ones to use will be the challange. Thanks!

ok. I've decided not to use my patriotic fabric. I'm going with a large scale print and lots of light colors. My sashing and border (calm) fabric will be med. blue. What do you think?

Thank you for your service to our nation, by the way.
I know your son is the Marine, but family is the one living with the burden of his being gone, so I always make a point of thanking the families that are lending our nation their finest young people.
Saving the patriotic fabric makes sense.
have you printed out the cutting instructions?
For color A, either color family or 2 yards of large scale print ... check
color B - - light colors ... check
color C - - dark scraps .... ? ? ? what have you chosen for those?
sashing and border ... calm fabric ... check

Sounds like you have it all under control, except for the dark scraps.
Looking forward to seeing what you are doing for the dark scraps ... am wondering ... are you going to use those colors from the large scale print?

I am very proud of my son, he is a truly amazing person! Thank you!

ok........... I have the large scale print.... it has flowers in assorted colors, birds, butterflies, and greenery....... I have light colors pulled in by the birds and flowers, going with dark green fernish for dark (just using one color), and blue for the calm background.

Thank you for your input.
