I need some advice on cutting and sewing half and quarter triangles. Specifically for a double pinwheel and a square in a square blocks (not sure if those are the "technical" names of those blocks). Don't have very much info on the subject...one source said never to cut out sqaures and cut triangles out of those and another said you can do it. bj was kind enough to send me fabric for the quilt I want to make and I just don't want to screw up and waste that fabric.

Most books want you to sew the square first then cut them into triangles. They say it is more accurate. I am not sure if it is or not. I cut the triangles out and then sew them. You have to be right on when you cut if you do this. You have a better chance of being off this way. It requires you to draw a line threw to sew from if you sew it in the square so you get a staright seam where it is supposed to be. Hope this helps. It is personal preferance.

I grid out squares on the lighter fabric,an inch bigger than finished size, draw diagonal lines, sew 1/4" on both sides of diagonal, then cut, press, and trim to size. I've also drawn the grid out on paper, which worked fine, but was a pain to get out from under stitches.
