Need help with "stripe" quilt

Hi, my daughter has asked me to make a quilt for her 3 year old son. I stumbled across this web site while looking for ideas. She loves the attached picture, and has chosen a variety of fabric with primary colors to incorporate into a quilt with a similar design. My problem is that I'm a very "symmetrical" person and trying to figure out a random "pattern", or lack thereof, is giving me some trouble. I want her to be happy with it! Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I would cut strips from each of your fabrics in varying widths if you are making anything larger than 45 inches wide you will need to join strips to get enough width. I am not sure how many fabrics you plan to use, but you could cut a 2 1/2 and a 4 or 5 inch strip from each fabric and then seam them together randomly and if you find this hard to do simply place all the strips into a bag and the next one you pull out is the one you attach (unless it happens to be the same as your last strip).

I'm like you, Nana, I have a hard time being "random". I'd probably plot out a random-looking pattern of differing stripe widths on graph paper and then follow that as my "pattern". Good luck, I think it will be cute!

And that looks very much like 2-1/2" strips with 4-1/2" strips and maybe a few 3-1/2" strips. It looks like they did the wider strips mostly out of the light and medium tone fabric and used mostly the distinct prints and darker colors for the narrow strips. Although the plaid seems to have been used in both wide and narrow strips.
To do with your daughter's fabric choices, fold the fabrics and lay them out on top of each other so that the strips are the width you are thinking of using and the order you are considering, then play around with rearranging it till you are happy with it.
