Hi Quiltinglady,
There are many free quilt patterns at the allpeoplequilt.com site. Also you could look at McCall's Quilting site.

The first thing that I thought of for a boy, is either trucks, or baseball. You could look online for patterns with that theme. Maybe blocks where each one is a different theme. That could be interesting too.

I made one for a baby boy using horses and cowboy fabric. It came out great. I think the fabric makes the quilt just as much as the pattern.

One of the easiest ways to do a baby quilt is to use preprinted panels. Then you can simply add sashing. I found myself in the same situation, except that I suddenly found myself needing to make 4 (yes, 4!!!) baby quilts before Christmas. I bought some preprinted panels and threw them together with sashing and a couple of borders. It literally took me less then a day to get the top together and once sandwiched (my least favorite part of quilting) it only took about an hour or two to do a meander stitch. Add the binding and all together I spent about 3-4 days on each one. I sew slowly so it will likely go faster for others. I'll post a pic of the top I did to give you an idea. I didn't have a pattern, just threw everything together.

Good luck! I can't wait to see what you come up with.

Check out some of the patterns being made for the Quilts for Kids organization http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-27514-1.htm. There are some really nice (and very easy) quilts on there. Also, if you look up the different fabric manufacturers websites, many offer free patterns for download.

You could use coloring books to get patterns of baby animals , cut them out of fabric and applique them on to fabric blocks. There are alot of kids sites with coloring pages or animals to print out.
