I am making a quilt from an actual antique quilt that has blocks that are quite complicated and have lots of points like New York Beauties. It looks like paper piecing would be the best assembly technique. Does anyone know of a good reference (book or you tube etc) where I could learn to make my own paper piecing patterns? I can surely draw and trace, but knowing which order to place the fabric on which segment seems a bit tricky. Surely there is a method to the madness. Can anyone point me in the right direction to a great reference? Thanks!

I am "self taught" so I can not recommend a tutorial, but there are several youtubes out there (I just googled "learning to design a paper pieced block" and "how to convert a quilt pattern to paper piecing"). Hopefully someone will chime in that has used a tutorial.

As far as the order - I use EQ and often change the suggested order. My decision is usually dependent on how many seams converge at one point and how many "units" there are. Can you share a pic of what you want to convert?

I too use EQ and given that I am not that smart at figuring out the order, I use the order EQ suggests or I post it on here, and someone points out the best way!

I think that planning a good order of piecing is the trickiest part of creating your own foundation pattern. keep in mind that sometimes the only way to do it is to actually make more than one piece. Maybe these will help you.

I bought the book with pattern ($40.00) and am so disappointed. She basically traces one (yes, only one) of the pointed stars in the blocks that look like new york beauties, and then says make 8 of them and applique them together in a circle. So I have to draft the block pattern from that one piece anyway, but appliqueing those very sharp points isn't really doable. If buying the book wasn't my first mistake, then signing up for a block of the month was my 2nd mistake, I am given no more "helpful" instructions beyond the books vagueness, and they are just sending me tiny bits of fabric, that are barely enough, and not even the colorway of the original antique quilt. So now I am using my stash, and trying to make my own pattern after I have thrown good money after bad. If it wasn't an opportunity to learn something new, like making and sewing paper pieced patterns, I would just quit this project.

The quilt is gorgeous! You will be busy - lol. There are several there that I might do as paper pieced. The one question you will need to ask yourself is "where will I tolerate an extra seam". Especially when converting an applique, seams in the background fabric sometimes are unavoidable - unless you do Y seams at intersections. Pick one to do - post a pic - and since there are loads of us that paper piece you will get lots of options and suggestions!

obtw - if I didn't hate applique so much I might be tempted on this one. It will be a masterpiece when done! Take it one block at a time and before you know it will be complete!

as the fabric with the BOM is scant, it probably won't convert to paper piecing unless you use your own fabric,
It is a stunning quilt, I hope you will share your progress, we will cheer you on like mad.

I signed up for BOM from the same website and the fabric was miserly. If one 2" piece was needed then 2" piece is what you got pre cut. I did okay with the fabrics but knowing I had to make exact use of the fabric made it hard to enjoy making it. I had to buy the book with the pattern in it but thank goodness it was a good book. I copied the pattern pieces one time each on printer paper and took that paper to Staples and had copies made. I asked the pattern be printed 10% smaller. It gave me a little lee way with the amount of fabrics sent. My first and last BOM from that shop.
