Looks like you are squaring the blocks up to 9" in this pattern.

Is the issue that you don't have 9" ruler, just the 9.5" square?

    If yes,
-place your ruler on the block with the 1" /1" corner to your upper right.
-Find the 4.5 center mark - where it meets vertically and horizontally - and position on top of the center of the block, with the the 4.5" lines extending to the mid points on all 4 edges of the block.
-Trim the right side and top side.
-Turn the block 180degrees, and line your cut edges to the 9" lines on the left and bottom sides.
Trim the right and top edges.
-Your block should now be a perfect 9" square.

If you're unsure of the concept, try it with a scrap of fabric first.

I'm sure there are some youtube videos out there.

I do have the 9" square ruler. Your explanation made perfect sense, and now I can get on with the work. I am using Moda's Clermont Farms fabric. After today, I'll have an extra hour of sunlight! Thank you SO much. Sherry

Well, heck, the 9" ruler makes it all even easier (sometimes people get a bit confused with extra inches, regardless of amount, when trying to square up).
So if you follow the video (and my instructions for lining up the 4.5 lines on those 2 blocks), you should be fine. They blocks will go together beautifully.
I actually like, when possible, to make oversized blocks and then cut them down.
