I like the Roxannes and silk threads.I do match the color to the fabric being appliqued.tiny stitches and they are almost invisible.

I use Dritz applique sharps size 10 easy to thread but thin enough to do good work, the straw needles are too long for my taste and my arthritic fingers.

P.S. to my earlier response: I did buy a container of Roxanne applique needles. I do not like them and do not use them. They are too fat and about 1/4" longer than the size 10 quilting betweens that I use. I like the short ones.

I don't understand the "applique layers." There are only two, aren't there?

I have used straw needles too, but found that the betweens don't bend as fast. I found a package of very fine needle threaders at JF and I can thread them by feeling it now. When I do needle turn, I use silk thread. It seems a bit pricey to start with, but I like the look it finishes with.

My most favorite is Jeanna Kimball straw needle #11, but I have used applique needles #11. I use a needle threader because I am older and need the help. LOL. I also use #60 or #50, 2-ply cotton thread. To me- the thinner the needle the smaller the stitch. Also a fine needle goes through the fabric easier. My opinions. John James has good needles too. I have tried to use Roxanne applique needles, but for me, the point seems square- doesn't pierce the fabric good. Again- my opinion.

If you are doing needleturn applique or preturned edge applique- 1 layer is the applique fabric, 2nd layer is the turned under edge of the applique fabric and the 3rd layer is the background fabric.

I use a John James Milliner size 10 or 11, and I use Superior Threads Kimono Silk #100 which is so fine it is almost invisible. Love it!

a friend gave me a needlethreader. the on where you put the needle in and push the lever and it's threaded. it's a clover and really works, had to do it a few times. but it works on the tiniest eye needles. good luck.
