I sew for my granddaughter but now want to quilt (always have wanted to - just now doing it). My question - I have thread I've gotten from WalMart, my mom has given me, and wherever. I have been reading about what kind of thread and I don't know if I can use this up or need to get the good stuff.

Also, I went to Connecting Threads and their thread is very reasonable and they have some sets that are even more reasonable now as they are on sale. What main colors should I get?

Thanks,
Scherrie

I have some of those bargain threads and keep them for basting and odd jobs, but I do not use them for real quilting work.

As for the connecting thread: do you plan to use it for the quilting or just for the piecing? I use greys and beiges for all my piecing. I picked a set of the colored thread to match the color values I like to work in. I recently added a larger variety to use in applique and I bought a variegated for top stitching/quilting.

I started with the neutral collection from Connecting Threads and now have most of their colors. I love their thread.

I only use 100 percent cotton thread for piecing and quilting; like others have said, if your threads are poly/mix I'd use them for basting etc.

For piecing, I exclusively use black, white, grey, cream and tan/beige. I use Aurifil.

For quilting (hand or machine) I have white and cream, also a goldy/tan variegated one that gets used a lot. Otherwise, I buy quilting threads as I need them for specific projects so have built up a modest collection. I do like the variegated ones though, for Free Motion especially. I get my quilting thread from a UK company mail order - their own brand, so not much help to you, I'm sorry! I'm believe Superior Threads are the best though, I think they're the only brand who use extra long cotton fibres and might change over to those next time I have to order. :-D
