    colleen,
    I have a couple of quilts my girlfriends grandmother made. She stuffed them with the cotton out of a mattress. You are right, they are heavy.

    I recently made a child's quilt with fleece backing and eliminated the batting so it could be used in a vehicle without being too bulky.

    Sometimes I don't like the bulk of batting and will pull the batting apart so it is only half as thick. I especially like this for place mats and table runners.
