This may not be the right place to ask this but I have a Kenmore sewing machine and I can't tell if the feed dogs are up or down. It has a minus (-) and a plus (+) but I don't know which is up or which is down. How do I tell. It sews with it both ways.

Thank you.

Your fabric wouldn't move on it's own if the feed dogs are down.

The +/- are for adjusting the stretch stitch balance, not used for anything else. When sewing normally, it should be in a neutral position. Hope this helps!

I have one machine where it doesn't have the feed dog down position, and one that does. The one that does has a switch on the back side of the machine, close to the table. Check there on yours, or your owner's manual!

Thanks everyone. I figured it out with your help. Even though it sews both ways the up moves easier.

Thank you.
What I did with my Kenmore was release the pressure on the foot. Then it was easy to move the fabric. Of course, the feed dogs wore off after about 9 years of FMQ.

If your feed dogs are down they will be recessed down in side of the throat plate . If they are sticking up and feeding the fabric thru then they are up. The feed dogs are those little teeth under the presser foot and that's what feeds your fabric through.
