OK, Quilt Guilds, Shouldn't you encourage those who show n Tell???

It's so exposing showing your work to others - i know when I first joined the board and posted pics I was quaking in my shoes at what you'd all think! But here, everyone is very encourageing and appreciative of EVERYBODIES work - and that's how it should be! We all have different strengths and areas of expertise and they're all as valid as the other. When I hear of snotty guilds like this it makes my blood boil! Thank goodness there are no quilt police on here! And yes, maybe those members unfortunate enough to hit on a bad guild SHOULD try and change things from the inside but that's not always possible (and not everyone is as mouthy as me! LOL) - sometimes the status quo is so established, it's just not for changing. I'd say, find another one if you can, and leave the meanies to it!

My Guild is pretty good about Show and Tell. Sometimes the members will begin talking between themselves about the quilt that was just shown and forget to clap but I try step and begin clapping. I know my work is not up to the high standards of others but over the years I've gotten confident and show quilts that I've worked long and hard on and also string and crumb quilts that I've put together quickly. I always try to make my quilts as carefully and attractive as possible.
Many of the gals in the guild have been quilting since childhood. I'm one of the 'older" gals in my guild but I've only been quilting for about 10 years. I like being in the guild, volunter sometimes and have been an officer once or twice. What I get most from it is having a place to talk about quilting especialy in my small group which spurs me on to be a better quilter, more accurate in my sewing and trying to be a little be more creative in my choices of fabrics, colors and patterns. I was fortunate in finding a nice guild when I started quilting. Actually, the guild found me! I was at Jo-Ann's, telling the sales lady that I wanted to learn to quilt and asking what I should buy to get started. Two shoppers overheard the conversation and rushed over to help me. I joined their guild, even though it is in the next town over, and I join in their sewing group whenever I can. If those two ladies hadn't been so thoughtful, I doubt that I would be quilting today.
Things have not always gone smoothly with this guild, but where do things always go smoothly? Show and tell seems to be everyone's favorite part of the meetings, and I have never heard a derogatory comment. Of course there are some quilts that get more appreciation than others, but that's to be expected - some of the quilts are really outstanding, some are service quilts, some use new techniques. I've been really encouraged when I've shown mine, I've learned a lot from the others, and I always go home more enthused about quilting.

I am president of my 50 member quilt guild. I love Show and Tell and make it a big deal. It's the best part of the meeting! I announce for quiet for each presenter to tell about her project. I ask each one a question about some detail of the project if the floor does not have any. I start the clapping after each one and thank the member for showing it. I show so much enthusiasm about show and tell it gets the other members perked up too. My advice is to be the one that claps and makes a big deal over the projects. :D

I belong to a clapping guild! Some do get more, but everyone gets something if they don't run off too soon! We are appreciative to all who are willing to share. I LOVE Show N Tell and love to hear what members have to say about their creations. Most of us are way too humble! I think anything finished is WONDERFUL! And we have all levels of skill and all varieties of embellihing, and types of quilting and piecing. We are varied and appreciate each others' talents! I am a happy clapper!

Well, I just have to say this. I am sitting home looking at my two "rows"? of five squares I sewed together, look sooooo not great and yet I'm a little proud of them. I chuckled to myself about taking a picture and showing it. (Since my bobbin ran out I took a break.) Back to the manual to figure that out. Let me tell you, I feel like I am in kindergarten and would have the lamest show and tell, lol. But--the great part is it is heartwarming and encouraging to hear the sensitivity coming from you all with regard to beginners, and beyond and inclusion. As a beginner, it strikes me well to be able to frequent such a considerate group of people.
I often think of this saying I once came across which can apply to and transfer across any efforts and abilities towards any aim. "Every diamond was once in the rough." It puts things into the right context.

Well, I'd LOVE to go to the local guild meetings where they do show and tell, but since it is for ladies only then I don't qualify. (Sorry, my pity party for the moment on the subject :( ).
I agree with the others above that a guild should be about building up ALL the other members, not just a select few, and not just those who meet their "standards" of what's good.
I view all of you wonderful folks on here as my "guild", y'all have been the most warm and welcome bunch I have ever met on the internet, always ready to help and encouraging as well.
