I've completed two rag quilts so far using the About.com directions - which yields a three layer sandwich for each block.

The first two (you can read about them on my blog - yes shameless plug) are pretty simple 5 blocks by 7 - so I sewed four seams on each of the 35 sandwiches and then sewed them together.

The next one in line is more complicated - along the lines of the can't cut it pattern - with the big blocks alternating with blocks of three and four components - so am facing exponentially more seams.

For instance there will be 8.5 inch blocks constructed of 4 4.5 inch blocks. Do you think I could instead start with stitching 2 rows of cotton with the flannel sandwiched - in a 4.5 X 44 strip, then cut my smaller squares and those ends would be "sealed" for lack of a better term when the bigger blocks are pieced together - or am I facing 18 big squares 28 little squares and 30 columns?

Is this making any sense?

Cheers, K

You can try just one strip and see what happens.

Sounds like it should work.
