Wow...I don't know that I would do a Mariner's Compass as my very first PP project! But...hey....you may do fine. My first paper piece project was the Houses BOM here on the QB and I have become somewhat addicted since...LOL. Here is what I used to learn...It is a you tube video done by Connecting Threads and it was VERY helpful to me. I watched several others but for me, this was the most helpful. I literally had my laptop right by my sewing machine the first couple of times. The two most important things to remember "wrong side to wrong side" and being careful to double check before you cut. Here is the video and GOOD LUCK!! :D :D

I hope that helps....let us see your work when you are done :D

Carol Doak has a website with tons of help - I consider her the "queen" of paper piecing.... also you can search this site for help by selecting 'search' at the top of the page.

The main thing for paper piecing is...take your time. Don't rush yourself. Once you get the hang of it, it's pretty easy.
If I can do it, ANYONE can!

Wow - don't think I'd do the compass either as my first attempt with paper piecing. Definitely try a few simple ones first...like the square-within-a-square. There's definitely a knack to successful paper piecing...and to me, that's using a lot of fabric until you get a good handle on it.

My very first quilting project was a pp mariners compass. Even though I was a beginner it turned out well.So well that I was sad to give it away as I had made it for my BFF before she moved out of state. So go for it.

I have made 3 mariner's compass quilts and often teach the class . I would suggest you start with a simple pattern,,If your local shop offers a class please do your self a favor and take a class before you start a more advanced pattern.

   And Terri has ME doing it now! If i can do it anyone can do it.

i find it every confusing though, although as I do more I'm sure that'll dissipate. I don't think I'd start off with Mariner's Compass although I've heard many people do!

Good luck!
