I have heard that some people do the MC as their first paper piecing.

That being said, I'd look at some of Amma's tutorials here on the board. She's got some great tips and there are a few mentions of various sites/links here, too.

Paper piecing is a little tough for some people to wrap their heads around {since it's backwards}. Now, I'm always backwards so it makes perfect sense to me but I have had several quilters who have paid for classes that still don't really get the technique. I still occasionally have trouble with some of the angles when I'm fussy cutting, but it gets easier with practice.

I love paper piecing...I think you can make the most intricate blocks with a fair amount of ease.

I haven't read everything on this thread but here is a tutorial I posted not long ago. Hope it helps. I am self taught paper piecer and I love it. A Mariner's Compass is quite a challenge but you will be pleased with the results as long as you take it slowly. :-D

If you do a "search" from the blue sections listed at the top of this page for paper piecing, you will find all of the discussions that have been previously brought up. Lots of info available!

Here is a pic of a group from my local guild. I taught this workshop. Most of these ladies have never paper pieced before! They did a great job. Am teaching the same workshop over in Texas tomorrow.

You can do it - it's all very orderly and logical, especially if you pre-cut all your pieces and are prepared for wasting some fabric. Think of it as "sewing-by-number."

I am a visual learner and took a class at my local quilt shop. I am so glad I did. I love paper-piecing now and have completed 2 quilts and have pattern and fabric to make "thistle pod". I recommend that you take a class. well worth it.

I did a mariners compass paper pieced and love it. I did just one to see if I could do it. You have to concentrate, mark your colors, and it just becomes repeated throught the square. I love paper piecing, and it takes some practice, like anything else. Have fun.
