This is definitely something a beginner can do. I did my first one a few months ago; a non-quilting co-worker saw it, and wanted to make one for her first expected grandchild. I helped her figure out how much fabric, showed her how to cut the fabric, how to lay it out, sandwich, etc. She used three layers of flannel. It turned out really cute, and she is very proud of herself! Her granddaughter was born last Friday, 3 weeks early, so she just barely got it done in time! Her DD & SIL were quite impressed, and her DH has already requested one of his very own. So she has already purchased more flannel, and another quilter is born! I got all my how-to info on-line, from sites like this, and other places, and figured it out from there. So go for it! If you have questions or need help, everyone here will be more than glad to give you advice and tips.

Here is a good tutorial:

http://www.quilting101.com/styles/rag-quilts.html

It suggests sizes from 7-12". I think I cut mine 8or 9" and used 1/2" seam.

I think a ragged quilt would be great for your little one. They love the feel of the ragged part.

I would not go with smaller than 4" squares, but any size will work :D:D:D Just remember that sewing 1/2" seams, your blocks will be 1" smaller. 5" blocks will finish at 4"
