Default Can someone tell me the name of this block?

]A friend stopped today with this block to see if I knew what it was or how to make it. I couldn't help her but took a picture and see what the quilting forum can find for me.

I guess I could have taken a better (and smaller) picture. I laid it on top of a glass top table...duh!

I think it is a version of a tumbling block.

It looks like some variation of a Tumbling Block...enter that in the search at the top. The shape of it is the same but hers has the borders which I haven't seen. Hopefully, somebody else will know.

i was going to say attic windows (a variation on the tumbling block). It looks like the one shown used triangles to cut the diamonds in half to avoid the Y or inset seam.

Penny Halgren has a 'hollow cubes' tutorial...I wonder if that's the pattern http://www.askpennyhalgren.com/IKM/q...umbling+Blocks

and here is a link to the book by marci baker http://www.amazon.com/ABC-3-D-Tumbli.../dp/0965143961
i did her original tumbling blocks by the strip method and it was easy to follow. i've not done the 3-d ones

Maggie Malone's book, 5500 Quilt Block Designs, has it listed as 'See Through Block' (#4641), though the one pictured above has solid sides because of the fabric placement.
Karen Combs uses it in her Inner Glow pattern (2nd one down).

Clearly, it is a version of tumbling blocks using a bordered equilateral (60*) triangle instead of a 60* diamond. It looks to be easy and fun to do. You don't need to worry about the angle on the borders because you trim them to match the triangles after they are in place. Most basic rulers have the39 or 60 degree lines to let you make the triangles.
