Sorry, I didn't read the question properly. If you try using 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" strips, the bits you cut off should be large enough to use for every alternate block. I would make a test block with scraps first.

Thank you all I got the math figured out for sides to make a square and now can proceed. It is super cool I think.

Sorry, my bad. I thought you had the large template from your question and I missed the mention that it was for charm squares. Sounds like you've got it all worked out now. The dimensions 2 1/2" by 6 1/2" are half the size of the side pieces for the large template and the small template fits 5" while the large template fits 10" so it all makes sense.
