Piano key border - size?

I have thought of using a piano key border so I have to say I don't understand. Please explain further.

I make mine 2 1/2" because that's a common cut in my quilting. use 2 1/2 by 6 1/2. I was going to post a picture, but I haven't mastered that with the new format.

If you have enough fabric you could put an additional seam in the keys you have already assembled to make them narrower, then cut your remaining fabric to the correct width. Once the quilt is finished nobody will know there is extra fabric in some of those keys.

Instead of cutting individual keys and sewing them into borders, you would take longer strips and sew them end to end, then sew the long side together, continue just as if you are making a jelly roll race quilt (really quick and easy). then, once the appropriate size, you would just sub cut strips to your desired height.
It would give a scrappy look and be much faster.

The way I understand it is .....
Instead of cutting individual keys and sewing them into borders, you would take longer strips and sew them end to end, then sew the long side together, continue just as if you are making a jelly roll race quilt (really quick and easy). then, once the appropriate size, you would just sub cut strips to your desired height.
It would give a scrappy look and be much faster.
