I have thought of using a piano key border so I have to say I don't understand. Please explain further.

I make mine 2 1/2" because that's a common cut in my quilting. use 2 1/2 by 6 1/2. I was going to post a picture, but I haven't mastered that with the new format.

And one of the first easiest and simplest ways I've seen to make a piano key border. I've thought about trying a piano key before, but sewing all those pieces, measuring, etc always stopped me. This I'm going try.

Cutting strips at 2" ( ending up with 1 1/2") would make a nice piano key border, but I also like the idea of adding smaller strips into your 2 1/2" strips.

I personally like a 1 1/2" strip on smaller quilts.

I vary the sizes of my strips because they would never fit right in the corners if I didn't.

If you have enough fabric you could put an additional seam in the keys you have already assembled to make them narrower, then cut your remaining fabric to the correct width. Once the quilt is finished nobody will know there is extra fabric in some of those keys.

The way I understand it is .....
Instead of cutting individual keys and sewing them into borders, you would take longer strips and sew them end to end, then sew the long side together, continue just as if you are making a jelly roll race quilt (really quick and easy). then, once the appropriate size, you would just sub cut strips to your desired height.
It would give a scrappy look and be much faster.
Hope that helps....maybe someone can describe it better than me...

Yes that is the way I do it. I had two jelly roll race quilt tops made and one had the colors of a perfect piano key border I wanted so I thought well cut a border.
