As much as I like Dresden Plates I don't like thm enough to appliqué all the curved ends down. I have done the plates where you sew the ends together to make the pointed ends. As far as I'm concerned those are Dresden Plates too. Pointed fans or part Dresden Plates make up a variety of other quilt blocks. I've seen Umbrella Girls, Fans, snake designs, umbrellas in the corner etc. Whatever you decide to do or call your blocks is fine by me.

I like all Dresden Plates. I have only made the rounded one, but I have seen them as rounded, pointed, and even flat. They all look nice. I think the pointed ones are easier to do by sewing the ends together to create the point. I didn't really know what I was doing when I made my Dresden Plate, but I lucked out and they laid flat.

I like making the pointed ones because there are no raw edges, makes it easier to applique down.

I like all styles of Dresden Plates and when I make the curved ones, I stay-stitch about 1/4" from the rounded edge. When I stitch it down, the fan will roll under along that stem and it's easy to tuck it under and sew it down. Still harder than the pointed ends, but fun to do. Great hand work project too.
