DH and I are planning a several week trip out West to visit National Parks and other sites of interest. I would like to do some kind of quilt as a memory of our trip. I've thought of buying a fat quarter in each state, or making a block named for each state (Quilters Cache has many named for states).
Do you have any suggestions? DH thinks I'm nuts but he is already loading a list of quilt shops into the GPS.

Thanks,
Pat

Go for it! One of the best ways I've remembered multiple trips to Alaska has been to visit quilt shops on the cruise path.

Sometimes the locations have specific patterns that really work out - try "Quilts with a Twist"for her snapshot photo album quilts.

What a great idea. You could also include some appliqué blocks of places you go. just a simple line drawing converted to fabric would do.

How about a combination of state blocks and picture blocks.

How about each states star. Or even a couple with fabs you bought in each one.

I've seen Sun Bonnet Sues visiting all different places. How cute would that be.

You could applique the state bird of each state you touch.

You could applique the state flower of each state you touch.

You could applique the state flag of each state you touch.

You could make your own pattern with each block with the state
bird, flower and flag on each state you visit.

Or find a pattern in each state that stands for something historical there. This sounds like you will wind up with a real treasure that you and your DH will now and then point to one block and say "Do you remember when you and I went....?"

Vicky, Thanks for the link. I love the idea. I've bookmarked the pattern.

If you are going to be going to Yosemite, Kings Canyon or Sequoia Nat'l Parks, PM me. You will more than likely be in close proximity to me, maybe even pass through my town, to get to any of these 3 parks. I would love to take you on a personal tour to my favorite local quilting store!

Take alot of pictures! Then make some of your favorites into applique "pictures", like a pretty forest scene or mountain scene- a bear picture etc. Use fabrics (like batiks) that you have gathered on your trip and that remind you of the scenery- sky colors, forest colors, animals.
