Well, if you just want a straight stitch machine, I suggest a Juki TL98Q it's throat is 9".

I go the Bernina QE 440 with the BSR and I bought it WITHOUT the embroidery module so I saved a considerable amoutn of money. You do not have to buy it with the embroidery module.

Don't know where you got your info, but I have to disagree. I have a 14 yo Pfaff and have never had a moment's problem with it. I like it well enough that 2 years ago I bought a new Pfaff just to get the 9 1/2" throat. I dearly love both machines and wouldn't give up either of them.
