Once again, on accident, I have turned traditional blocks into a masterpiece. This is actually a Modified Nine Patch combined with four Flying Geese/Goose blocks. It happened when I was sketching out blocks from a huge book of block patterns (500+) and began to fiddle around a bit and ended up with this. I call it "Shuriken"...kind of a throw back to the "Ninja Star" quilt, but these look more like actual ninja stars.

Way cool! I like the circular sub-design.

sandpat 12-06-2009 04:52 PM

Its a picture for now so I don't have any pattern measurements to give you. But you're welcome to use the design.

jljack 12-06-2009 05:03 PM

Thank you!!! I'll get my friend to help me figure out the sizes and post the pattern information here, if you say it's OK. Since it's your design, maybe you want me to IM it to you first? Thanks for the OK to try it. I think it is wonderful!!! I really love it.

You can post the info on here, but message me a copy as well. If you can get different sizes for each block that would be great (I had intended 10" blocks, but other people might want to try 6", 8", or 12").

For anyone else who wants to give this design a try, I'm perfectly okay with it unless you want to profit from my design. Other than that, go nuts! I'm just glad people are interested.

sewjoyce 12-06-2009 05:24 PM

Very pretty!! I love it! :D

littlehud 12-06-2009 07:01 PM

Very pretty design. I really like it.

shaverg 12-06-2009 07:43 PM

What did you use to design it with. EQ6?

SaraSewing 12-06-2009 08:34 PM

Wow - what a ambitious project. Is it pieced or PP? Keep us up to date with photos in progress!

wvdek 12-06-2009 08:51 PM

Great design and even like the colors you used.
Did you use EQ6?

Actually, graph paper and Photo Shop. On Photo Shop, I drew the block out then deleted the area where I wanted to put color in and put a picture of a fabric on a layer underneath the pattern and the fabric showed through where I had erased. Then I merged the layers, deleted areas again for the second color, then put a picture of another fabric on the layer underneath the pattern. Voila!

Do I have this correct? If it is I will put up the pattern in the various sizes

Flying_V_Goddess 12-06-2009 11:00 PM

The blocks look correct. But you're missing an extra column of blocks on the right side.

amma 12-06-2009 11:03 PM

Ok, I will change it to 5 X 5

Goddess, you should consider selling your patterns and not just give them away! Your work, going back to the Tsunami quilt and beyond, is fresh and contemporary, yet appeals to traditional quilters as demonstrated here. You have a good eye and I know you have other artistic outlets as well.

I'm sure you could find pattern testers to make up the quilts you design and you would never actually have to make them (i.e., buy the fabric and do the sewing) yourself. You could probably even partner with someone, another designer perhaps, to help with the writing process (the math, the wording, the proof-reading, any stuff like that you might need). I think you are doing yourself an injustice by giving your work away like this. Just my opinion mind you.

thequilteddove 12-07-2009 07:55 AM

Did you do these in EQ? If you did, are you able to load the files here?

bearisgray 12-07-2009 08:00 AM

The large block appears to be on a 5x5 grid.

It is a great design. Very striking.

amma 12-07-2009 10:17 AM

Yes it was done on EQ I will have to see if the file size is small enough to post here.

amma 12-07-2009 10:22 AM

Ok, I am attempting to make the EQ file available...if someone downloads it, will you please let me know if this works lol

I wanted to sell my patterns of my designs, but the legalities/copyright issues confused the **** out of me. And I would need a LOT of help with the writing process because, well, I'm not the most expert quilter here---I've kind of winged the quilts/blocks I made (like not being particular about what grain the pieces are on or which way to press, etc) and I don't rotary cut (and most magazines have rotary cutting instructions). Actually, to be honest, I've never seen a packaged pattern for a quilt (the inside of one, anyways). I think I would need a team of quilters to get this to work correctly.

Your quilt design is beautiful! Thank you for sharing.

Flying_V_Goddess 12-08-2009 12:42 PM

Wow

Deb G 12-08-2009 09:07 PM

You are very talented. Have you thought about selling your patterns? You could have someone make up the dimensions for the blocks and the fabric amts and then you could make a quilt to see how it goes together, take a pic of it and you have a marketable pattern.
Don't forget to copywrite it.
