1/4" foot with both left & right "prongs" being 1/4"
 

On my domestic machine when I'm quilting small straight lines on a bed-size quilt I like to be able to sew 1/4" to the left of the seam line as usual and then instead of turning the whole quilt around, lift foot and put needle down 1/4" to the right of the seam and sew in reverse. I guess-timate it now and have looked but would love to find one with both side of 1/4". All the ones I've seen have a bigger prong to the left of the needle. (I have a Pfaff Espressions 3.0)

Anyone know? Google didn't find one. Maybe a glass shop could cut my plastic one for me?

I have Brother machines. I found an open toed foot that has the same size prongs on each side. To get my quarter inch on the right, I use the left needle setting and then come back .5. That lines me up so that I am running the edge of the fabric on the inside of the right prong. That way I can look at the fabric all the way to the needle. I would think that it would work the same by using a needle left setting and use the inside of the left size of the open toes foot.

This is the more expensive Brother labeled foot similar to the one I bought which was a generic and would fit multiple machines. I don't like plastic, because I can't always see it that good for lining material up.

My Bernina 440 QE 1/4" foot is the same on both sides.

Also, if you put the fabric at the outer edge of the foot, your seam is 1/4". If you put it at the first indent, your seam is 1/8". And if you put the fabric right at the edge of the foot closest to the needle, your seam is 1/16". A good thing to know when you are topstitching purses, totes, clothing, etc.

Well, after looking over my big Brother, I don't have a right needle setting. That was a surprise, but since I have never looked for it and I bought my machine in 2007, I haven't missed it. So, I set the needle as center, then moved it to the right as 6.0mm and this gives me the left 1/4 inch at the inside of the left prong. By the way, I don't sew with the single needle plate, I always use my zigzag opening because I am always moving the needle when I am piecing.

mckwilter, what needle setting are you using - center?

I know that the Little Foot made by the Purple lady was 1/8" on the left edge while 1/4" on the right edge. I never checked my Bernina piecing foot to see if it the same on both sides.

Thanks, Barb and everyone! Here is a blurry picture of my 2 1/4" feet. I want one for straight stitch and don't want to adjust my needle position, etc. for the frequent (a few inches) changes I need to make.
The plastic one is a little better and I can at least see thru it. It's just so much easier to hop to the other side of the seam and reverse than to turn the quilt around and reposition it. I'm about to echo quilt a Hunter's Star, super King size and this would be soooo handy to do! I'll check with the glass store and see if they can trim or sand the plastic one. Will let you know!

Wow, Nancy! Believe my machine takes short shank. certainly I'll try to get in touch with them. It's ideal because it is the straight stitch I want! Thanks very much! I'll follow up and let you know. Reasonable price, too!

Darn, Nancy, I just saw a review that says it will not fit a Pfaff because the bar is too short!! Oh, heck, it was such a great find. I will still call them to see if they have others like it.

Which Pfaff? I have a 2144, and the feet for that are the same on both sides. So is the stitch in the ditch foot.

The 2144 is a 9mm machine, but I have used the 6mm open toe. When I bought these feet, they were common to both the 6mm and 9mm machines since they are single stitch. See if you can find a foot for group G

I did try a foot from the first Creative on the 2144. It fit.

Yes, with the Berninia 1/4" foot (#37), you can only use a center setting (or one click left or right). I won't tell you how many needles I've broken by changing to a different stitch but forgetting to change the foot.

My Bernina foot is clear and I can move the needle either way and have 1/4" for quilting like you want. I never thought about this until I read this thread. You gave me a great idea! Thanks!

I have an older version of the Pfaff 1/4" foot that is 1/4" on both sides. It looks like the one in this photo: http://www.pfaff.com/global/4190_3236.html

Perhaps if you check with Pfaff dealers they might have an older style one in stock.

No go again I'm afraid! I pulled up the one you showed, got the part number and searched. Unfortunately it also is bigger to the left. I will try taking my plastic one to a "glass" shop. I have a metal one as a stand-by.

I thing to consider my Viking does not mind a few back stitches..but it does mind many more..as I was told by the dealer..most all home machines are made to feed the material front to back..of course I had to try it..Many broken threads later I gave up.

As you've now found out, the old style Pfaff 1/4" is the same on both sides - I have both. You might get one on eBay. Happy quilting!

Thanks, Knitette. The feet for my old Pfaff don't snap on like the new ones, but thanks to FairieFarm I hav found the new one they make for my model (and I'm sure, most of the new Pfaffs where the feet snap on.)
