Just wondering how many of you are participating in the 1 Million Pillow Case Challenge.

The Fabric shop I frequent most is having get togethers every other Monday where anyone who wants can come in, bring their sewing machine, and make pillow cases all day. A few of us have even started getting together on Saturdays there, too. We bring a simple pot luck and snacks to share and sew all day from 10 am to 5 pm. It has gotten to be a lot of fun seeing how each pillow case turns out. They are so pretty and gives us a good feeling as to where they are going. A lot of people that come to the shop have donated a bunch of fabric that they have laying around and have no plans for.

Our shop is will be up to the 1000 mark by the end of next week. That was the goal, but now they will have to raise the goal. Even one or two pillow cases adds up when everyone gives one.

we do not have a shop here where I live. :-(

JanetM 07-15-2010 03:13 PM

Yes, I have made quite a few pillowcases for the challenge. I think it is a very worthy cause and the pillowcases are so easy to make. Several LQS's have been collecting them in large numbers here. ;)

I have heard about it, but have not done any. My Mom is interested though, and I gave her the information.

quiltlady37 07-15-2010 03:17 PM

My small group made 35 pillow cases last month. Yes, it was fun to see how the different fabrics went together.

amma 07-15-2010 03:18 PM

Our LQS are collecting them and have kits for sale :D:D:D

justwannaquilt 07-15-2010 03:19 PM

My daughters girl scout troop with alot of help from our leader and myself made a total of 28 pillowcases. Then the following week we tie dyed them. Each girl gets to keep one of the ones that she tie dyed and then the other 20 are going to the Ronald McDonald house in St. Louis. Although there is not a local store participating our pillowcases can still count since we are donating to a charity in the community!

What a great idea and a good way to socialize. My LQS is at least 55 miles away - but wish I could participate.

CarrieAnne 07-15-2010 04:41 PM

Ours arent doing anything either, but it sounds like lots of fun, and a worthy cause!

SuziC 07-15-2010 05:59 PM

That sounds like a lot of fun. Wish there was a place near me to do that.

I just made my first pair using this great tutorial from Missouri Quilt Co (just look at their project section).

http://tutorials.missouriquiltco.com/

It seems a little confusing until I had everything cut and followed along with the pinning of the first one. Every seam was perfect. Great tutorial.

ncsewer 07-15-2010 06:56 PM

I've made 10 so far. My LQS just started donating to a 2nd shelter because they had so many (didn't ask about the total). The owner just showed ms a "bunch" of letters from the recipients, they loved them!

lovequilts 07-15-2010 06:57 PM

We are having a "Pillowthon" sewing "Bee" at my LQS in August in place of our regular class. It will be fun just to sew and visit.

leaha 07-15-2010 07:17 PM

thanks for the link to the tut, really easy!!

wvdek 07-15-2010 07:45 PM

I just finished making 8 Tuesday to add to my other 8. I have more fun making these and choosing the fabrics.
I use this link:

Jenny really explains well. Her tutorial is wonderful.

I make these on my own, no guild or group or LQS involved. You just follow the directions on this link as to what to do. So easy.

Pastors wife and I have spoken about doing them and at teh next women's meeting I will have a plan and present it. Even if I am the only one that shows up, I will be doing them. Otherwise, even if the ladies can't sew, some cook (we gotta eat), some can measure and cut, some can iron, others can sew. All will be welcome to come.

I will be giving mine to a group home here in my county. There are approximately 48 kids there.
After that, I will be making them for the veterans who must stay in the continuing care/nursing hom part of our VA hospital.

Theresa 07-15-2010 08:26 PM

I've made close to 75 of them, thanks to fabric donated by two friends. It is a very worthwhile cause. Help is needed to get to the 1,000,000 goal.

Joanie2 07-15-2010 10:13 PM

Last year my guild donated almost 350 pillowcases. We hope to beat that number this year.

texas granny 07-15-2010 10:16 PM

I have made several. I'm waiting for my new featherweight to do more sewing. My lighter machine need fixed. So I will sew this next week again. I will havr to ask the shop and see how many we have had turned in so far

I had to share. These are the first pillowcases I have made that I actually like. I used the tutorial I posted from the Missouri Star Quilt Company but I think I messed up their name on my previous post and I want to make sure I correct that. Sorry about the bad photography. I really should crop that one.

That is such a fab site. I watch a lot of tutes on there.

littlehud 07-16-2010 08:54 AM

That is such a great cause.

I found this set of additional patterns for the Pillow Case Challenge for anyone interested.

Pretty pillow case. It looks great.

Conniequilts 07-19-2010 11:46 AM

I have only made two so far. I am not sure what the total count is for my LQS.

2 is great. If only everyone would make at least one or two they all add up. That's great. If I wasn't doing it with a bunch of friends with a lot of donated fabric I wouldn't make as many as I do. I am lucky to have a LQS so close to me. Everyone doesn't have one that close or one that is involved in the Challenge. I did order some fabric from the Eleanor Burns sale that was less than $3/yard to do a few with, and used a lot of nice fabric I had around home that I had no plans for, but now most is donations, so that makes it easier.

KwiltyKahy 07-19-2010 07:24 PM

Any one can participate in the pillowcase chalenge. The thrust of it is to donate in your own community. They suggest that there are many places these can be donated, nursing homes, chemo clinics, sick, abused, and negelexted children. All the information is available at the American Patchwork and Quilting website. Be sure to visit there to record any that you donate, you don't need a shop to do it.
I got the people I work with at a Hancock Fabrics to make some and our first collection was 62. We will do another collecion in September and hope to at least double that number.

KwiltyKahy 07-19-2010 07:35 PM

Just watched the tut from Missouri Quilts. Great tut, that is the way I've been doing them except I also do a french seam for the sides. That way all the raw edges are enclosed.

Eagle Hawk 07-19-2010 07:48 PM

Thanks, Kwiltykahy, for adding what you did. I hope you encouraged even more people to make and donate pillow cases. I bet you do double that amount in Sept. You are all great.

I used to work at Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa and I saw pictures on one web site where they were handing out pillow cases to the kids there. What a great feeling. And, what a great hospital that is. My kids were both born at Iowa Methodist Medical Center and Blank is just the peds hospital section of Iowa Methodist. That sure did make me feel good, so I knew they are going to some good places.
