1" single fold bias tape - how wide cut strips
 

Does the 1" refer to how wide the tape is when both sides are 'folded' in? Would I then cut bias strips at two inches and fold in 1/2 inch on each side? Thanks!

I believe so, but you can give it a try with a small strip to be sure. I've only made double fold; for binding I use the
1-1/4" maker and cut my strips at 2-1/2". Hope this helps!

Thanks Lynda! I cut the strips 2 inches and used my bias tape maker. Worked perfectly. I needed the binding to finish off arm holes on a doll dress. :)

Hi, Geri! For Trisher's use, having just a single layer on the edge is enough. For a quilt, having the fold at the edge doubled helps to prevent it wearing thru with use.

Use double fold to cover/bind an edge, like a quilt. Use single fold for adding a casing to slip a string or a piece of elastic through.

When making a sleeveless dress, you can "bind" the edge with a contrasting doublefold tape (think lightweight cotton summer dress), or use singlefold tape as a narrow, light weight facing. When making a velvet dress, a self facing would be too bulky, so single fold tape is recommended for facings of this weight.

Now I think I got it! Double fold is the same as what I refer to as French fold, as we do in binding a quilt...single fold is what wright tapes are ( packaged in stores).....

They also have the double fold in the store so read the package label carefully.

Wrights also sells double fold and in various widths. And the description is that simple - single fold only has the outside edges folded in and double fold has these edges folded back in so that you can 'encase' the fabric edge. Also, if you look closely at double fold, you will see that one edge is just slightly more narrow than the other. This is the side you use on top. This helps assure that your edge stitching will catch the underside.
