10 degree wedge tool
 

Could anyone give me the dimensions of the 3 sides to a 10 degree wedge ruler for quilting? I think I can make one if I have the lengths of each side. Thnks, I'm working on a butterfly quilt.

Bottom of wedge will always be 10 degrees. Length of the legs increases as they move out from the bottom of the wedge. Does this make sense? There really is no way to tell you how long each side would be. The only constant is the angle which is always 10 degrees. Use a protractor to find the 10 degree mark. Then figure out how big you want your butterflies to be and figure from there.

The downloaded butterfly pattern has the template with it, but I don't know if it printed out the exact size or not. I am speaking of an acrylic flat four-sided wedge tool, which is shorter across on one end than the other. You use it to make strips for the body of the insect I think. It's complicated, as I am new to using a 10 degree wedge tool or ruler (as it is sometimes called).Thanks for your interest anyway.

The shorter end (as you call it) is the 10 degree end. Check the template with a protractor. Narrow (shorter) end should measure 10 degrees. This is the Only measurement you really need. The "legs" of the wedge can be any length and Will get wider as they move out from the 10 degrees. Use the template, it will make your life easier, but first check to make sure the 10 degree measurement is actually 10 degrees.

If you have the print out of the 10 degree wedge, just double check it with a protractor to make sure it's 10*. As far as the length of a specific tool, can't help much unless you know the exact manufacturer. Wedge rulers can vary from 5 or 6 inches to 22+. Google it to see the variety available.

Did the printed template have a guide with it? Mine says if this box is 2 inches square, then the wedge is printed correctly. Mine did measure 2".

No guide with the template. As I study the pattern more, I think I will need the wedge that is 24" long; and the template is just for the applique of the body. The wings are made with strips that are cut with the 10 degree wedge. I'll just go to the big city sometime and measure one. They are quite expensive I believe. Thnks anyway.

I can measure mine for you. It is exactly one inch across the bottom, five inches across the top and 22 1/2" long. This is the plastic phillipsfiberart 10 degree ruler, not the paper one that came with the download of the pattern I am currently working on. Hope this helps.

although it is always nice to have the exact size needed for easy cutting, one can use any 10* ruler to cut what you need. lay the ruler down and lay your long straight edge against it. use the long straight edge for your cutting. i hope this makes sense
