Last night as I was quilting, I was listening to one of the elm creek quilt books, and Sylvia tells Sarah it will take 12 blocks to make a queen size quilt. I have also had friends say 12 blocks for a queen. Does someone want to help me figure this out? I have a quilt I am doing that is a combination churn dash and 9 block and I have 20 blocks. My sashing is 4" and has 2 borders on each side of about 5". The top and bottom have two borders each of about 7 1/2". I think those are the measurements, too tired and can't remember.

Anyway, I have more blocks I am working on for other quilts and if I only need 12 for a queen, then I would need less for a twin, right? Anyway, if any of you would help me figure this out, that would be great.

The top of a queen is 60"x80" long. So I guess if you were making a minimum of a 20" block it would work and then sashing etc. for the drop. The top of a twin is 36"x72".

I know when I make a queen it is finished size roughly 85 x 85. And when I do a twin it is roughly 70 x 90. Hope this helps. I don't know how only 12 blocks would work unless you are making big blocks or huge sashing. ??? good luck

If you place them on point with alternate plain blocks, I think it would be a twin.

Every quilt depends on the size of blocks so there is no rule. My queen bed has a thick mattress so I need to custom size and do not follow any rules for quilt sizes.
