I'm working on 16 patch blocks. Out of the 4 blocks I've made, I've noticed that the seams are different. No matter which way the seams are going, all blocks lay flat.

Is there a method I should follow so all seams are laying the same? :?

Holice 10-03-2011 10:44 AM

I have never been able to piece so all the blocks seams fall where they should. I just have to reiron as needed.

How are you piecing them? In strips? If so, I'd have each row going an opposite direction so they nest when matched. As Holice mentioned, this may require re-ironing.

Use the sticky note trick to make easy accurate seams in all parts of the block. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-109768-4.htm#3778642

Then press seams in opposite directions in your rows.

QuiltsRFun and Jan both have the right idea. You do both of these and you can't go wrong. It's usually caused by not doing one of these things or the other.

here is another tip...do them as 4 patches first then put your four 4 patches together..it really helps keep everything lined up!

I prefer to press all my seams open. So much easier and they all lay flat.
Starch fabric before cutting, pin carefully, sew and press open. I prefer to
sew four patches then sew the four patches as one big four patch.
Also, make sure you are using a perfect 1/4" seam.

Thanks for the diagram, I need all the help I can get. I read your sticky note tip on another thread a while back. I was really having a difficult time with my 1/4" seam and was surprised when it really worked.

Thank you sooo much for sharing!

On some I use 4 patches, sometimes by rows. I guess I need to settle on one. To my surprise, everything is lining up perfectly.
