2 1/2 inch and 4 inch squares

I have 2 1/2 inch and 4 inch blocks that I had planned to use for a 3-d bowtie quilt. After several unsuccessful and very frustrating attempts to complete the blocks, I have given up on that pattern, and ripped out all of the seams. I have no desire at this time to make a bow tie quilt, but I want to do something with the squares.
I love the fabrics,I have a white, 2 solid greens (different shades) and 6 greens. Ihave a picture of another quilt I made using the same material. Iwill try to attach it here for you. I have not had much luck inattaching pictures. (I can see the pic in the "preview post" option, so hopefully it is there and I cannot explain why it is sideways) [ATTACH=CONFIG]579209[/ATTACH] Does anyone have any pattern ideas? I am limited in what I can do as I already cut my material into these 2 size squares. Important lesson learned – prior to making a new block, cut material for a few blocks only to make sure can sew it properly and you really like it !! Dee |
yes, never cut lots first. I did that with side triangles but forgot i was adding sashings to an on point setting.
I am at the moment cutting more six inch hexagons and savings scraps from those. I want to cut 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 squares and maybe small rectangles too out of scraps. Then i like you, will try to find a pattern to use them in. i think we may need to just put on our thinking caps and come up with one. I do like the photo you added. Very nice. |
Either size would make a nice granny square or great granny square. I'm partial to that pattern right now...just finished one.

I thought along the same lines as Kassaundra. You could make 4patches from the 2.5" squares and trim them down to 4".
Check out Bonnie Hunters' website & blog, she uses lots of 2.5" HSTs in her quilts. And I love the quilt in your photo |

Kassaundra and Gay, it is funny you picked that one. I have already done it twice. The first one I did, i didn't do the outside mitered corners. it looked to complicated. I kept it for myself. The I did a second one and tried the mitered corners... and it turned out okay for my first attempt. I gave that one to my sister. I will try to post pics of them.
What I am thinking about is... a granny square of the smaller squares. then a ring of white. then a ring of white and larger squares. I guess I am going to have to count out the peices and get out my graph paper to see what size I can make it. Thank you for your comments on my quilt. Being my own worst critics, I made so many mistakes in that quilt, starting with not having a pattern and not using a 1/4 inch seam, so I couldn't make more 4 patches to make it bigger. blah blah oh the drama!!!! Anyways, I figured it out on my own (pat on the back) and am pleased with how it turned out. Dee |

I think you have done a great job with the different sizes of blocks in one piece. The 2" squares look great as you have them.
Seems you could be proud to give this as a gift or use in your home. Our guild has this type of piece for Community quilts;;give to the police dept. for children who are dumped off at the police station, the firemen who have similar situations. Most anyone would be proud to have in their home on display or as a small lap quilt. My opinion is that not everything has to turn out 100% in quilting or in life. We just "pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and start all over again." Mariah |
