2 color quilt

Besides Irish Chain, do you have suggestions for blocks/patterns for a 2-color quilt?

I have several yards of 2 specific fabrics, and I would like to make a quilt just from those 2 fabrics (even though my personal taste leans toward Bonnie Hunter scrap-ish types of quilts).

Any suggestions?

The Hunter's Star pattern looks good in two colours!

If the 2 fabrics have good contrast, then Disappearing Hourglass would be my choice. There are some great examples on QB of different arrangements of the blocks.

cjsews 12-14-2015 04:40 PM

Pineapple block would look good too

ManiacQuilter2 12-14-2015 04:46 PM

D9P is an easy pattern with just two colors used.

wesing 12-14-2015 05:14 PM

If you have good contrast Rolling Waves would be a good pattern. Similar to an Irish Chain but looks really cool and modern.

Flying geese are dramatic in just 2 fabrics.

Orange peel can look really cool.

Really, depends on your 2 fabrics, but most of the classic quilt blocks take on a dramatic and graphic feel when done in just 2 fabrics.

beaqltr 12-14-2015 05:31 PM

If you like scrappy quilts, perhaps you could make a sampler quilt using a variety of blocks.

If your fabrics are high contrast you could make two versions of each block, reversing the colors, or make half and half blocks where the colors are reversed on half the block.

thank you! I was trying to remember the name of that pattern. One of my first thoughts, as well.

Just goggled Rolling Waves and it is a nice pattern. I went to the link in the 2nd thread above and like this quilt. Is it Rolling Waves?

On The Quilt show email I received today, Sue Garman is working on the neatest two color quilt. I sent her a message to see if she sells the pattern. No response yet. I really like it.

yes! that's it. great example.

Just posted a picture of Sue Garman's quilt she is working on. Post disappeared. Guess I shouldn't have done that. Anyways, she replied to me already with a nice email. She does not have the pattern for sale yet since she is still working on it. She told me to follow her blog as she posts at the beginning of the month and will have 2or3months left to finish it. It is a really nice 2 color quilt.

I just love 2 fabric quilts - they are so dramatic and striking, and usually look very modern, too. Here's a quilt I designed after an 'unrecoverable' cutting mistake. It has three fabrics if you count the accent border and the binding.

I've since made two more bigger quilts like this. It works great with a large print or a medium sized all over print. This particular one is one of my favorite 'I made this!' quilts.

A large block chevron quilt will be nice, too, and pretty easy to make.

For more of a challenge, the bear paw one looks good in two colors and for a real challenge, Evelyn Sloppy's "Entwined" will keep you busy for quite awhile.

Try Deb Tucker's Hunters Star!! It is spectacularly beautiful with 2 colors, and using her rulers, it is a SNAP to put together, and NO "Y" SEAMS!!....check out pictures of variations (there are several) with 2 colors on her website.

I made two quilts Illusion in two fabrics. They had more than two colors, my best choice.

Yet again, I know you are tired of seeing it LOL, I am going to say 9 patch with a snowball. It is super easy, uses standard cuts, very forgiving in application. I used 6.5" squares and 2.5" square. Aqua and white for an Aunt in flannel and the brown and aqua for an Uncle in flannel. Flannel front and backing with wool batting. They both love them for the warmth as they are elderly, well, some say, so am I LOL!!

Sue Garman's quilt looks a lot like a Burgoyne Surround. https://www.google.com/search?q=2+co...HZQYAroQsAQIHA

A pattern is available. I did one in confetti colors, someone said it looked like I dropped Skittles. Grabbed the wrong picture, this is just the unfinished top. Let's try that again

WOW! Never ever thought there would be so many 2 color quilt options.

IBQUILTIN 12-15-2015 10:17 AM

Ron Appel has some really neat patterns on YouTube that can be done in two colors.

dorismae904 12-15-2015 11:46 AM

My suggestion is the Drunkards Path. I made a king size for my daughter which turned out nice but I got so tired of just two colors.

LOVE the two color quilts in this book SPLASH DASH AND PANACHE . Check it out on Amazon and you can see if it is something that you might be interested in pursuing...
Butterscotch Sundae is one of my favorites....I am making it in red and white.... All quilts in this book are supposed to be easy to make..

A lot of old quilts in museums are made with white and (usually assorted scraps) dark blue. One design I have enjoyed making alternates 4-patch blocks with pinwheel blocks. Half of the pinwheel blocks have to go each direction. (I originally thought up this idea when a club block exchange collected pinwheels going both clockwise and counterclockwise.)

ube quilting 12-15-2015 04:14 PM

imho, just about any block can be made with two colors. I like drunkards path, sunshine and shadow, birds in the air, ocean waves, snow ball, 9P, barn raising, etc. The list is endless. Enjoy which ever pattern you choose and don't forget show and tell!
peace

charlottequilts 12-15-2015 08:30 PM

Janecat, did you mean 2 colors or 2 fabrics? To me, those are not the same question, as a 2-color quilt can have many fabrics in shades of the 2 colors and look quite different from a 2-fabric quilt.

Hugs,
Charlotte

If one of the two fabrics is large scale print, try Totally Triangular. It goes together quickly and is very striking.
