OH, what a great thread!
Mine (so far...) - finish my first ever quilt, which is so far just a top (I've done other quilts since then, but the first one I ever did has never been finished; it's a giant king-sized quilt and quite the mess but I HAVE to finish it!) - make and enter at least one quilt in the county fair (I don't care if I "win" anything, I just need to put myself out there) - make at least a half-dozen quilts for the Linus Project, all from my stash - sew something with (yikes) curved seams - improve my FMQ skills - make at least ONE quilt just for myself, and KEEP it (I keep giving them all away as soon as they're done!) And I'm considering joining a local guild. :) |
So now that I've read everyone's quilting resolutions for 2013, I guess I should make a stab at it. Will probably not finish them all, but would probably not finish half if I don't set the goal high. Not necessarily in the order I plan to tackle them. So here goes:
1) Finish anniversary quilt for my parents. At their 60th celebration we all signed pieces for a "Diamond Wedding Ring" quilt, lap size, that is about 1/2 done. I had hoped to finish it by Christmas 2012... 2) Finish "wedding" quilt for DD and SIL. They were married in August, I told them it would be a 1st anniversary gift. This one is barely started. Have all the fabrics--will be doing Judy Martin's "Monet's Wedding Ring" pattern, NO curved piecing! ?) Sometime in the spring--move my sewing room from partially finished basement to upstairs room recently vacated by DD #1 who got married last summer. DH is after the basement room for his woodshop, so should have LOTS of help getting things moved! Looking forward to warmer space, more natural light, but not to the carpet on the floor. The room is not any bigger, but I think will be a better layout for my sewing stuff. 3) Finish queen quilt for Master BR. Top's been done for over a year, I've been putting off basting the layers together, my least favorite part. 4) Get my blog going and my on-line store up and running. This was supposed to happen when I quit my job last fall, but we all know how life intervenes. Don't ever expect to get rich, but it would be nice to be able to sell a few of the things I make, especially since everyone is always telling me I need to market my stuff. 5) Work on (not necessarily complete) one WIP every month. This way I won't get bored with any one project and will at least make progress. 6) Get started EARLY on Christmas projects--first complete the two I started this year and didn't get finished: strippy snowman tablerunner, and pinwheel pillowcases, both for me, which is why they didn't get finished! 7) I think that's enough to go on... 8) Oh yeah, post photos on QB of all the projects I finish! |
My wish/goal list for 2013:
1. Complete one project/ufo per month. 2. Do 6 charity quilts not included in my one a month. 3. Work on Baltimore Autumn with my yahoo group applique addicts. 4. Go to Nana's Quilt Shop in Brookesville Florida and learn the Long-Arm. She will teach you for $140. Then you can rent the machine for $15 an hour. 5. |
In winter months I hope to focus on just one area at a time:
1. January-longarm quilting lessons and lots of PPP. 2. February-machine embroidery software lessons and complete projects using new techniques I've learned. 3. March-EQ7 lessons, develop quilt layouts to use up some of my stash. Ongoing 2013: Continue quilting charity quilts for guild (about 20/yr). Quilt five tops from my growing stack of UFO's. Start Christmas projects much earlier than I did this year. |
I didn't set up goals for 2012 but will do for 2013. Here they are:
1- Make inventory of all the UFO/WIP 2- Box them for easy access- right now they are everywhere and I don't remember where I was at 3- Work on my UFO/WIP at least twice a week - I am a full time worker with an 8 yr old Son. Some weeks I don't even stop by the sewing room. I read a good tip, start for the UFOs that need less work- this way the sense of accomplishment will motivate you to keep going. 4- Will start and finish a quilt for my youngest Nephew- overdue. My excuse I don't have orange/yellow fabric. enough! andrea |
I am so sorry to hear the news of your Father. I think you are right by staying busy. Horseback riding is great therapy in dealing with what life brings you. I miss my Mom and Dad and Brother, and 2 sisters. Also, lost my horse which I had for 18 years... Kinda lost interest in riding but love seeing the different competitions, especially dressage. I send my condolences to all on the board who have lost anyone this past year. It has been a hard year for so many in our Nation...
My goals: 1. continue organizing my sewing room. It was only a bedroom 5 years ago but has ballooned into a running over monster of all kinds of sewing objects, fabrics, pins, machines, baskets with stuff, shelves with stuff, etc, etc.... 2. Go to as many Guild meetings as I can this year as I have cleared other things that had kept me from going. 3.Organize all my to-do quilts that are all coordinated fabrics but need cutting. 4. Begin constructing to-do quilts after organizing. 5. Control my impulses to jump from one thing to another and so I don't become "scatter-brained" 6. Start sewing! |
Goals are good to set. For 2013, I'd like to get back to quilting. I started about 9 years ago, but haven't done much the last several years.
1) finish a quilt top that 9 of us shared blocks for 2) piece the Fractured Crystal quilt I bought fabric for several years ago 3) take a long arm class to quilt the 2 quilts above. I've run my first and last king size quilt through a sewing machine to quilt it. I often tell my wife that you need the right tool for the job- for quilting, that is a long arm, not a sewing machine! 4) get proficient using EQ7 BTW - some acronyms are commonly used that I'm not sure what they are. And I work in Aerospace where there are lots of TLAs! UFO - unfinished object? WIP - work in progress? If so, when does a WIP become a UFO?... And now that all these goals are being set, how does the accountability happen? |
I would like to join in on the goals for 2013! I have already got the jump on my goals.
1. Not buy any more fabric unless much needed for a immediate project 2. Use up a lot of what I have. (working on it) 3. Make baby blankets for charities 4. Make lap quilts, cozy shawls for the nursing homes. (made 6 shawls this weekend) 5. Become more organized. (Did label and categorized some drawers and items today) 6. Finish the green lap quilt, top is done 7. Finish the Christmas lap quilt , top is done 8. Finish the King size 10 minute block, top almost done 9. Make 5 lap quilts for my co-worker buddies for Christmas. (in process) 10. Learn to use my embrodiery machine 11. Make stacks of potholders, embrodiery towels, etc for Christmas gifts. I will print this off and post in my sewing room to keep me on track! :) |
Please count me in.
My 2013 quilting goals 1. Quilt 6-8 quilt tops. These are tops already made. 2. Make 5 quilt tops for family members 3. Finish 2 quilt tops for paper piecing wallhangings, which I took classes for last year. 4. Complete Quiltville Mystery Quilt 2012, I'm only 5 parts behind. 5. start/Complete quiltingboard, planet patchwork, about.com mystery quilts for 2013. 6. Make top and quilt some guilt projects for charities. 7. Remember to enjoy process and not stress myself if it is not perfect. |
Between health, decluttering and remodeling issues, my only goal for 2013 is to do something quilty for 1/2 hour each day. I'd like an hour, but some days, even that is hard to manage.
|
I am right there with Quiltngolfer..I really need to get with the FMQ. I know it's mind over matter, but just can't grt there!!
|
I plan on making a granddaughter's quilt for HS graduation, a scrap quilt, a few UFO quilts, and try and use my stash.

I want to just get back the desire to get to my quiltroom again. All the projects, fabric, books, patterns and no get up and go. Any suggestions for that? I have so many UFO's of my mom who passed 03/21/2009 to finish for my siblings.
|
I think you need to start something for you and then perhaps get started on some of your mom's UFOs.

Here are mine: 1) Sew at least 1 hour daily.
2). Finish all started Bonnie Hunter patterns before June. (Easy Street, Christmas Lights, and My Blue Heaven) 3). Finish 2012 Michael Miller Quilt 4). Complete assigned blocks for quilts of valor (guild project) 5). Attend at least one retreat. 6). Have fun and meet and enjoy other quilters! Finish all started Bonnie Hunter patterns before June (Easy Street, Christmas Lights, My Blue Heaven) |
At first I didn't think I really had any goals....I thought about the fabric moratorium and really considered I would be able to do it...then decided that not really, it didn't fit with my needs.
So here is what I've decided... I will stash dive first, then buy what I need to fill it out. I will start a new project every month (I joined a 2013 NewFO challenge) I will learn a new technique (I'm going to sign up for the french braid class in our LQS's winter session). This Christmas (2013) will be as homemade as I can possibly make it (friends and family watch out!!!). I have about 6 full size quilt tops to quilt, I will do at least two of them. (doable goal) That's all I can manage resolution wise. |
I want to thank everyone who responded to this post. I think sharing goals is important and may help us stay with them. Good luck to everyone. Have fun.
|
Design and sew a different rag quilt each month.
1) Bargello rag quilt 2) Cathedral rag quilt 3) Take Five/Six rag quilt 4) Etc, etc, etc. |
This year I want to reduce some of my leftovers and not always use new fabric. I have so much stripes and pieces from other projects and want to use a part of them for mug rugs, tapel toppers and other little somethings.

I'd like to commit to quilting/piecing at least two hours a week. I know for many of you, you'll laugh...but this past year has been hell. I work full time, have a family, have pets, ride my horse competitively, so that means riding 5-6days/7 and my dad had not been well. I lost him on 12/5. So rather than make clearly defined "i will make this, or learn this", i'd like to committ to doing some thing related to quilting two hours/week. Betsey |
My 2013 goals are
1. Piece and quilt one charity quilt per month using a new-to-me technique for each one. 2. Try freehand FMQ and quilt at least one project freehand. (I started FMQ this summer but always use a stencil or traced pattern -- even for stippling.) 3. Make over the door organizer for smaller rulers and pantographs. 4. Piece and quilt one quilt just for me. |

I have a list of more than thirty unfinished quilts in all stages of completion and that is what I want to work on.
peace |
My goals are:
1. Keep up to date on my BOMs. I do too many of those. 2. Make one quilt top a month 3. Complete the Leah Day class on FMQ 4. Quilt at least 3 quilts on my DSM. |
My Guild started a PhD (practucakky Half Done) program last year. On Jan 1 you listed any project (kit/pattern or whatever) that you had started or wanted to start on a list. We paid $1 for each item listed. You had to show them at the meeting as they were finished. You received 1 chance for each item on your list. In Dec everyones chances were put together and we had a 50/50 drawing for the money. I had 27 on my list and finished 23! Boy was a busy!It made me quilt some, start some new ones and do something with UFOs. We are doing it again for 2013. But I am doing two list. One for the Quild I pay and another for myself and I am putting that money in a bank as I finish one. Then I will have some money to spend at the end of the year!

I started a quilt in February 2011 to commemorate my son's retirement from the Marine Corps. The top has hand applique and embroidery and took me 18 months to complete -- I have almost 1,000 hours just in the embroidery. I started hand quilting it this past summer, ran into some challenges and at present I've completed about a third of the quilting. My goal for 2013 is to complete this quilt before summer. Then I'm going to celebrate! I allowed myself 2 years to make it and dreamed about presenting it to him at his retirement ceremony in 2013. However, he decided to retire a year earlier so I missed that opportunity. Oh well, a year and a half late isn't as bad as the quilt still hanging in my sewing room that I started for my granddaughter when she was ten. She's now 21.
When I complete this quilt I'm going to start practicing machine quilting and, hopefully, become good enough that I feel comfortable in machine quilting at least one UFO. I have a lot of tops and will never get them all quilted by hand. |

So, we're through with the first quarter of 2013, anyone for a progress report?
Item 1: 60th Anniversary signature quilt for my parents--top done, needs to be quilted and bound. Item 3: Sewing room is done, done, done! See photos on "Mission Organization", thread--2nd Story Studio. Item 4: Etsy shop is now open (link is below), still working on website/blog. Life is too short. I'd rather be quilting! I'd love to see what progress everyone else has made! |
My goals as I set them:
1) Halloween piece work (a embroidered quilt with halloween theme - quite involved surface embroidery) 2) Quilts of Valor (2 - have one cut) 3) Japanese circle quilt 4) Row Robin (a swap here on QB) 5) Pillowcase dresses (I make these for the children in the Phillippines) 6) Buttrefly quilt (I embroidered 9 butterfly squares -- need to make them into a quilt. Fabric has been on back order for 3 weeks. Maybe I won't get this done!!) 7) Friendship quilt (blocks done, need to finish, then quilt) 8) Cross stitch birds (I have 2 cross stitch bird patterns started, need to put time into the stitching to finish) and 9) quilt swap (another swap here on the board) Well, I'm still working ont he Halloweel quilt - it has lots of embroidery work and I just keep plugging away. I've done two Quilts of Valor and have a 3rd cut. This one is a more complicated pattern and will take some time. My Japanese circle quilt ended up having a pattern change and is finished. Will try to find picture and post. The row robin is still in progress. I anticipate getting the next row next month and will work on that when it comes. Haven't done anything on my cross stitch birds, so fell down there. The quilt swap is finished and am working ont he binding. Will post picture when that is done. Have pillowcase dresses in progress, always working on one or two and the butterfly quilt is sitting patiently waiting to have something done with it. One day. Oh, well, I'm planning a personal quilt retreat this weekend and will start in the early a.m. and hopefully work all day Friday and then Saturday and get some good things accomplished. |
Just found this thread. Great idea. Decided yrs ago resolutions don't work. But goals just might. So I've some goals for myself.
1. Determine how I fit into the art world, not traditional quilting, doing art quilting and this opens up the art world 2. Establish myself as an inovative quilt instructor 3. Love myself, my quilting and my friends 4. Admit my health is fragile and take care of my fragile health 5. Be thankful and improve my spiritual life 6. Integrate my life, be kind to myself and enjoy life, 7. Give myself permission to quilt because I want to 8. Finish 2 UFO's (king size needs to be quilted and collage pant and vest) 9. Check my stash before buying new So a progress report 1. Have joined an art quilt group, am trying to sell at an art studio, will have a one woman show in July and Aug, and will sell again this Oct at Sierra Art Trails-ya all come 2. I'm teaching classes at Sierra Fiber Arts in Fresno, Ca. The store owners are very supportive of my out of the box classes 3. This will be a lifelong goal. I've joined a local group and the art group and try to remember them and enjoy them. I'm a "lion" personality type and truely goal oriented, not people oriented, so caring for others is not my natural bent. But God is a relational being and I want to be more like Him. With His Spirit I will have success. 4. I've grown bored of the PT for my shoulder, but have chosen to take care of myself and finish the process. I've also been more careful with my diet. Now to loose 10 lbs 5. Worken on this 6. Trying to put together a daily schedule, but so far no progress 7. Yes, trying 8. The king size is on the LA, but not further progress. The pant & vest are still in the drawer, maybe after -10# 9. YeH! Doing good here! |

HI Scraplady....love the anniversary quilt....today is my 41st anniversary....and yes, he's finally put a little gray in my hair. I wondered about the pattern...who makes it...where I could find it? I revisited this thread today since I posted in it December 2012....I sure hope I'm NOT THE ONLY ONE who has fallen short of my goals....
Blessings... |
I made a to do list for 2013. Forgot all about it, then came across it and discovered that I had already done two of them. One was to do embroidery on a jacket for my daughter and the other was to put quilt squares together that my MIL gave me from her MIL. Now to add to the list and get busy.
