UglyCook took some amazing pictures from the 3 Sisters Quilt show. There was one quilt in particular that caught my eye and I thought I'd ask if anyone knew how to make the 3-D flowers. Aren't they adorable!

UglyCook said she would post the pic here #108 (Thanks UC)

Is this the right picture?

Yes, thank you so much UC!!!

It sure would be cool to view a tutorial on this technique!

I have done those but I am not really into that folded fabric stuff. I have a friend who creates all of her own not just flowers either--awesome work but you can't quilt it--have to watch as feet get caught in it. So my friend does quilting as she goes to do her blocks. Her last quilt was done in all white so a pic does not show up all the fabric manipulations.

I was interested in this quilt because I first saw the back and it was tied, not quilted. The designer cleverly tied it through the center of each flower and then added a bead.

I did a 3D flower quilt but it was an amish dahlia that I found on quilters cache. Here's the page

Here's how it turned out

I think I may have seen this method done on Simply Quilts a # of years ago. Can't remember what she called it. Something like fandango or some such thing. I do believe the guest was a lovely lady from UK. Had a real fun personality. And red hair? Perhaps someone else will remember it.

Beautiful quilt by the way!

To me it looks like something that would be in Louise Mabbs book "Origami Quilts". It has been awhile since I saw the book, but I think this block/flower is in there... Good luck

Wow! Thanks for the link! I can't wait to try this! I think I might have my daughter try a couple too!

Has anyone made these yet? Any tips?

franie 07-12-2010 06:44 PM

That is an excellent way to do that quilt. I love it.

Yup, that's the one. I have 28 blocks in my WIP box. Thanks for reminding me. If you love these, you'll love "Fantastic Fabric Folding" by Rebecca Wat.

That's gorgeous. I think I even have that book but have never tried anything in it, I guess I should do that.

I took pictures of a similar flower at a quilt show last summer. Haven't yet figured out how to fold the fabric.
