In the early 80's I took an adult ed class and started a hand pieced, hand quilted, white-on-white, some type of QAYG. Of course I don't have the directions. The quilt is nine sections and of course the bottom right hand corner remains to be sewn on the front, and the entire back needs to be sewn. My problem and the reason it remains a UFO is that the bottom left and bottom center pieces need to be ripped and resewn because they are off a 1/4 inch. I don't think I have the patience nor the inclination to hand piece it again. What if I just machine piece it? Opinions please. (Please don't ask for a picture b/c I haven't figured out how to use my new digital camera yet.)

The question is: Will YOU be satisfied with it if you machine piece part of it? If you will be fine with it, then go for it. If it will always bother you that you didn't finish the hand piecing, then you'd better wait.

Will you be happier with it finished, finally, or with it waiting for a better time to be hand done?

You nailed it. Part of me would like to finish it the way I started it. The other part of me just wants it done.

If you can cultivate the time, inclination and patience and really want to get this old girl done and out of the way then bite the bullet and get to work. Your posting this question because your just not 100% sure you'll be happy if you finish it by machine piecing. You need to do 2 of the 9 sections, right? In the grand scheme of things that's not all that much and think of how proud and contented you'll be if you do it up right! 'Nuff said

If it were me? I would go ahead and machine sew it. But you need to do it the way that will make you the happiest in the end :D:D:D

1/4 inch off. That's not much. Personally I would finish it up as originally planned and display it on a quilt rack or use it. Without pictures its difficult to see how important that 1/4 is, are you short of backing and batting in those areas? Batting is easy to piece and add in, backing can also be pieced and probably won't be seen unless pointed out. Am interested to see what decision you make and see the finished quilt.

OK. That 1/4 inch bothered me.Normally I can fudge but not this. I just finished ripping out the whole bottom row. I'm amazed that the ripping was more difficult because the hand stitching was tighter than machine. I haven't decided what to do yet. I'm just glad I was able to take it apart.
