Hi All

I am new to quilting and have just purchased some 5" charms to get me started.
Are these the right type of material for making a patchwork throw for my daughters bed?

Also what else will i need?

Yes! there is so much you can do with 5" charms! I just bought some from this site, I cant wait to get my hands on it all!You can make a D9P, you can cut them into tri-angles, the list is endless!Have fun with it!

The 5" charms are perfect for making a patchwork throw. I am a relatively new quilter (less than a year) and my first quilt was a charm throw.

Actually, they are still one of my favorite go-to items. They are already color-coordinated and that is still one of my hardest things to do - picking out colors that go well together.

Just google "free charm quilt patterns" and you will be surprised at the great patterns you find.

Hi, and welcome to the board, from Texas. The charm squares are a great way to get started in quilting. I'm sure they will make a nice quilt for your daughter.

I see you are from Swansea. My maiden name was Swanzy and we think our ancestors came from the Swansea area, but the name was spelled differently when they came into the U.S. Some day I would like to visit there.

Totally your call - can be one solid piece of fabric (coordinated or not), if you want it reversible - do another charm patch or sew 3 or 4 (whatever it takes) pieces together to make the size of the backing you need.

Charms do make alot of quick and easy projects.

You will learn many different ways to use the charms and as for the back you can do it all as one piece of fabric or several put together :thumbup: the most important rule is have fun and do what makes you happy :wink:

This question was asked last week and some great answers were given. If you do a SEARCH at the top of this page, type in "5" charms", you will have several great replies all of which are pretty doable for a beginner. Good luck.

5 inch charms combined with 5 inch patches of a solid color will make a great checkerboard pattern. Add a solid strip of fabric for the border and you should have a nice first time quilt. The back can be either a solid piece of fabric or it can also be a patch work piece....it is your quilt and you do what you like!! A lot of my friends use up all the scraps from the quilt front project on the back side so they don't have any leftovers but me, I like to do scrappy quilts and all those leftover pieces go into the scrap box to be used later :lol:
