5 day trip to Pennsylvania

I have 5 lovely days in quilters heaven next week....am visiting from Ireland.

I'd love some advice on best shops..dry goods stores...museums to visit
and things not to miss.

I really don't want to miss the good stuff..I'm in desparate need of a battery and
inspiration recharge!

Thanks

Karen

Welcome to the United States! My paternal grandmother was from Mayo, Ireland. I live in the state just above Pennsylvania and have heard many wonderful things about shops there. Unfortunately I don't remember the names of the shops. I will attempt to get a hold of my other quilty friends and see if they have any advise.

Don't know anything about quilt shops in that area, but enjoy your visit.

Welcome to the forum & I hope that some of the members in that area see your posting. I did a quick search & see 5 pages of members listed. http://www.quiltingboard.com/members...sername&order=
If it was me traveling, I would be tempted to go through the listing & find a member who currently posts & send them a PM. This forum is so large that it is very easy for members to miss your posting and they might be delighted to hear from you. Have a great trip!

What part of PA are you visiting? I live about 45 minutes from Erie, PA and I know there is a little quilt shop there called Millcreek Sewing and Fabric. There is also a shop in Cambridge Springs, PA called Country Stitchin'...a quilter who is gaining in popularity, Dusty Farrell, is the machine quilter there.

I hope you are going to Lancaster! If you are, let us know - there are LOTS of great shops to visit.

Welcome to the US. I'm not familiar with the area but I'm sure many here are. Have a wonderful time!

There are several nice shops in the Erie PA area, which is in the northwest corner. Kelly's sewing corner is small but very lovely and Kelly is a hoot. Very nice. Foxs sewing is a great store, lots of selection, a little further south from here. And there s also a great store in Mercer PA, called The Gallery. These are my go-to shops for this little corner of PA.

Lancaster! There's Zook's, The Country Store, Sauders, The Quilt and Fabric Shack, Burkholder's and Weaver's. All great stores. You will need to ship trunks of fabric back to Ireland. Lucky you!

Lancaster, Intercourse (that's the name of the town) are the right place to be! You'll get all the inspiration you need. Bring lots of $$ because you'll find anything you have ever wanted there, all at great prices! Welcome to Pennsylvania!

i also want to go to Obies. I'm told you have to see it to believe it. Fabric stacked to the ceiling all around you

Addresses for most of the shops mentioned and more are at http://quiltart.com/lancaster.html
And http://quiltart.com/ lists a lot of shows/activities

Obies? OMG! You really won't believe it. The only word I can use is W O W !!! That place is packed to the rafters with fabric! You can't pull anything out without any help or you'll end up with bolts on top of you. Each aisle is jammed packed from floor to ceiling with bolts. Only 1 person can walk down the aisle at a time. It's an overwhelming experience!!

I'm here in Lancaster County. Actually live just a few miles south of Lancaster. Can do lunch if you'd like to meet up and can help you navigate to some of the shops. Just let me know! You can send me a PM, as sometimes I don't get back to the same threads on the board.

For a quilter, all roads lead to Intercourse, PA. If you have time it may be worth stopping in Goodville as well. I have not been but I have heard of amazing fabric deals in their Fabric superstore. You are going to have fun! Pack light and bring extra bags because you will be ditching everything to stuff your bags with fabric at amazing prices.

tlrnhi 03-29-2013 06:06 AM

Goodville is where Obies is and right down the road about 2 min is the superstore. Both places are amazing!

charsuewilson 03-29-2013 07:40 AM

What's the address of the superstore?

tlrnhi 03-29-2013 03:04 PM

I don't know the addy, but it's on the same road/hwy as Obies. It sits back off the road, so you really don't see the building when driving by, but there is a sign
